Smartious wasn't built in a boardroom — it was built by a Mathematics and Physics teacher who watched too many capable students fall behind in classrooms that couldn't move at their pace, and too many families forced to compromise on education because of location, cost, or schedule. I started Smartious in 2018 to fix that, one student at a time.
Dear reader,
When I started Smartious in 2018, I was a young mathematics and physics teacher visiting Nairobi homes one at a time. The families I met all wanted the same thing: an excellent education for their child, delivered with care, on their own terms.
What began as one tutor in Parklands has grown into a network of 78 qualified teachers across 14 countries. We deliver five international curricula — Cambridge IGCSE, Pearson Edexcel, Cambridge A-Level, IB Diploma and the American curriculum — alongside our own Smartious Blended programme. We have two physical centres in Nairobi (Diamond Plaza Parklands and Karen Hardy) and serve families online from London, Dubai, Toronto, Riyadh and everywhere in between.
But the heart of Smartious has never been the curricula or the technology, important as both are. The heart of Smartious is a simple promise: your child will be known. Known by name. Known for what excites them. Known for what they struggle with. Known well enough that we can meet them where they are and walk with them to where they want to go.
If you are a parent considering Smartious for your child, an investor wanting to understand our business, or a partner exploring collaboration, I hope you find here — and in our full company portfolio — a clear, honest picture of Smartious in 2026.
Education is the most consequential thing one generation passes to the next. We take that responsibility seriously. Thank you for the time you'll spend on this page.
From single-tutor home visits in 2018 to an international online school serving families across four continents.
Alfred Ouko, then a BEd student at the University of Nairobi, begins tutoring private Mathematics and Physics students one home at a time. The first formal Smartious model emerges within months — a structured one-on-one approach, focused on building genuine subject confidence rather than just exam memorisation.
Through his undergraduate years, Alfred adds subject specialists in Chemistry, Biology, Business, Economics, English Language and Literature. The student base expands from Nairobi suburbs to the broader county, with most families finding Smartious by referral.
Alfred completes his Bachelor of Education (Science) at the University of Nairobi, specialising in Mathematics and Physics. With formal teaching credentials in hand, Smartious formalises its tutor recruitment standards — every teacher must hold a subject-specific degree at minimum.
Smartious adds dedicated programmes for Cambridge IGCSE and International A-Level, IB Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma, Pearson Edexcel International GCSE and A-Level, Kenya CBC (KICD-aligned) and American Curriculum with Advanced Placement. Subject and curriculum specialists are recruited specifically for each pathway.
The Smartious Learning Management System launches with three portals — Admin, Teacher and Student. Features include live session delivery, recorded session libraries, assignment and assessment workflows, automated billing, integrated Paystack payments and the Mshauri AI tutor for 24/7 student support.
Kenyan and African diaspora families in the UAE, UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Qatar, Bahrain and other countries begin enrolling — using Smartious to maintain Cambridge, IB or CBC curriculum continuity through international relocations. Country-specific pages launch for 14 territories.
78+ qualified tutors. 14 countries served. 5 curricula delivered. 21 Nairobi area pages, 27 UAE area pages and 6 Kenya city pages live. Two permanent centres: Diamond Plaza Parklands (HQ) and Karen Hardy.
