Regulatory framework

Homeschool laws & regulatory framework in the Ireland

Ireland operates a comprehensive education framework under the Department of Education (DoE) with 8-year primary + 6-year secondary compulsory education. Ireland has a specific homeschool regulatory framework requiring Túsla registration.

Túsla (Child and Family Agency) registration for homeschool families

Ireland Education (Welfare) Act 2000 Section 14 requires parents withdrawing children from formal school to register with Túsla (Child and Family Agency). An Educational Welfare Officer (EWO) will assess adequacy of provision — no specific curriculum required but "certain minimum education" standard applies. Smartious meets this standard as accredited international curriculum provider.

Smartious Túsla-compatibility

Smartious delivers Cambridge IGCSE, A-Level, IB Diploma, American AP, or Ontario OSSD with documented curriculum, contact hours, assessments, and progress reporting suitable for Túsla EWO review. Families register with Túsla and provide Smartious documentation for adequacy assessment.

State schools free for all residents

Irish state primary and secondary schools are free for all residents including expats. Multinational corporate rotational families and post-Brexit relocations may choose state schools; Smartious serves specific segments requiring international curriculum, portability, or specific UK Russell Group / US Ivy League pathway.

Multinational corporate expat families

Multinational corporate rotational families operating under residence permit frameworks may use Smartious without Túsla registration provided child is not withdrawn from a specific enrolled Irish school (i.e., online curriculum as primary education from arrival to Ireland).

Why families choose us

Why Ireland families choose Smartious

Reasons grounded in the realities of Ireland education — local school capacity constraints, corporate transfer and diplomatic timing, commute and logistics, currency stability, and the curriculum portability that mobile expat and dual-nationality families need.

1

Multinational corporate rotation portability

Google Ireland, Meta, LinkedIn, Salesforce, Apple Cork, Microsoft, Intel Leixlip, Analog Devices Limerick, Medtronic Galway, Pfizer Cork, Eli Lilly Kinsale rotational assignment cycles supported without curriculum switching across Dublin → London → San Francisco → Singapore → Tokyo postings.

2

Post-Brexit UK family curriculum continuity

Substantial UK family influx to Dublin since 2016 Brexit vote. Cambridge A-Level continues UK Russell Group UCAS trajectory rather than Irish Leaving Cert switch. Smartious delivers Cambridge / A-Level directly.

3

UK Oxbridge and US Ivy League pathway

For Irish and expat families targeting UK Oxbridge or US Ivy League: Cambridge A-Level or IB Diploma is natural pathway; Irish Leaving Cert requires additional documentation. Smartious delivers Cambridge / IB directly.

4

Túsla-compatible curriculum provider

Irish Túsla-registered homeschool families access Cambridge / IB / American / OSSD accredited international curriculum meeting Educational Welfare Officer adequacy standard.

5

International curriculum access outside Dublin

Cork, Galway, Limerick, Waterford, and Kildare have limited to no local international school options. Corporate rotational families historically face Dublin relocation, boarding, or overseas study. Smartious extends full Cambridge / IB / American / OSSD access across Ireland.

6

NAISD / SEK / ISD fee arbitrage

Smartious at USD 2,160-6,480/year (~EUR 2,000-6,000/year) vs EUR 12,000-25,000+/year Dublin international schools with identical Cambridge / IB / American qualifications.

7

Ontario OSSD pathway

Irish and expat families targeting Canadian U15 (Toronto, McGill, UBC, McMaster, Waterloo, Western, Queen's) complete Ontario Secondary School Diploma via CCIS partnership — apply via OUAC as Ontario secondary graduate.

Universities verify Cambridge International, Pearson Edexcel, IB Diploma and American AP qualifications directly with the issuing examination boards through standard verification services — Cambridge International Verification of Awards, Pearson's Verification of Results, the IB Organisation's verification service, and the College Board AP Score Reporting service. FAQs

Common questions from Ireland families

Ireland state schools are free. Why would we choose Smartious?+

Ireland state schools are excellent and free, and many families use them successfully. Smartious in Ireland is not primarily a fee-arbitrage play (unlike Gulf/Asia markets). Smartious serves specific Ireland family situations: (1) multinational corporate rotational families needing portable curriculum, (2) post-Brexit UK families maintaining Cambridge / A-Level trajectory, (3) families targeting UK Oxbridge / US Ivy League needing Cambridge / IB rather than Irish Leaving Cert, (4) Túsla-registered Irish homeschool families needing accredited curriculum provider, (5) fee-sensitive families switching from NAISD / SEK / ISD international schools.

We're post-Brexit UK family relocated to Dublin. How does Smartious support our curriculum continuity?+

Very common Dublin family situation since 2016. Smartious delivers Cambridge IGCSE and Cambridge A-Level continuing UK curriculum trajectory. UCAS pathway to UK Russell Group (Oxbridge, Manchester, Bristol, Warwick, Edinburgh) continues seamlessly — no need to switch to Irish Leaving Certificate which does not directly substitute for A-Level in UK admissions.

How does Smartious compare to Nord Anglia International School Dublin (NAISD)?+

NAISD (Leopardstown, only Ireland full IB continuum school ages 3-18, IB PYP + IGCSE + IB Diploma, EUR 16,000-25,000/year) provides physical campus premium IB education. Smartious provides live online Cambridge / IB / American / OSSD at USD 2,160-6,480/year (~EUR 2,000-6,000/year) with identical qualifications, immediate enrolment, and cross-country cohort.

Is homeschooling legal in Ireland? What does Túsla registration involve?+

Yes. Ireland Education (Welfare) Act 2000 Section 14 permits homeschooling. Parents withdrawing children from formal school must register with Túsla (Child and Family Agency). An Educational Welfare Officer (EWO) will assess adequacy of provision — no specific curriculum required but "certain minimum education" standard applies. Smartious meets this standard as accredited international curriculum provider.

We're multinational corporate family (Google, Meta, Intel, Medtronic, etc.). How does Smartious integrate with our rotation?+

Ireland multinational corporate rotational assignment cycles (2-4 years typical) supported without curriculum switching. Ireland assignment continues seamlessly through moves globally. Cross-country cohort with peer international corporate families provides social continuity.

Where do Ireland students sit Cambridge examinations?+

Authorised Cambridge examination venues in Ireland (some Dublin international schools accept external candidates) or short flight to UK Cambridge examination centres (Bristol, Manchester, Birmingham typically 60-90 minute flights from Dublin, Cork, Shannon).

What Irish universities accept Cambridge, IB, and AP qualifications?+

All Irish universities via CAO (Central Applications Office) international admissions channels — Trinity College Dublin (TCD), University College Dublin (UCD), Dublin City University (DCU), Maynooth University (Kildare), University College Cork (UCC), University of Galway, University of Limerick (UL), Munster Technological University (MTU), South East Technological University (SETU, Waterford), Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin). Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) for medical.

How does live class scheduling work given Irish Standard Time and Nairobi teaching hours?+

Book an assessment for your child

Two-gate admissions process. Submit the assessment request form — our Head of Admissions reviews every request within three business days. If accepted, the assessment fee is invoiced before the diagnostic is scheduled.

How the process works
  1. Submit the assessment request form. Full student and family details, curriculum interest, target universities. No payment at this stage.
  2. Admissions reviews the request. Our Head of Admissions evaluates fit against current cohort, year-group capacity, and curriculum alignment. We respond to every request within three business days regardless of decision.
  3. Assessment fee invoiced on acceptance. If the request is accepted, the family receives an invoice for the assessment fee. The fee is required before the diagnostic is scheduled, and is credited against the first month's tuition if the family proceeds to enrolment.
  4. Diagnostic assessment and curriculum recommendation. Structured testing across English, Mathematics and Science, written report, and a 30-minute consultation with the Head of Academics.
  5. Enrolment decision. Admission is determined on the basis of the assessment results, not the form alone. Families that are a good fit receive a formal enrolment offer; families that aren't receive an honest recommendation of better-suited alternatives.
