Honest comparison

How Smartious compares to top United Kingdom schools

UK online school competition is genuinely mature — Cambridge Home School Online (CHS Online) leads at £10,950/year secondary / £6,099/year prep with live classes ≤10 pupils and UK ISI accreditation. King's InterHigh (£8,000-15,000/year), My Online Schooling (£10,000+/year), InterHigh, Immanuel Online School operate the mid-tier. Wolsey Hall Oxford is the self-paced budget alternative at £4,000-£7,000/year (no live classes). Smartious sits BELOW this competitive set at USD 2,160-6,480/year (~£1,700-£5,100/year) with LIVE small-group classes (4-6 pupils tighter than CHS's 10) and cross-country cohort. UK independent schools operate at fundamentally different fee tier — London premium day £26,000-£30,000+/year, London boarding (Eton, Harrow) £48,000-£52,000+/year, Manchester/Birmingham/Leeds/Bristol premium day £15,000-£30,000+/year — the traditional fee-arbitrage market where Smartious offers dramatic savings with identical Cambridge / IB / American qualifications and UCAS pathway.

Regulatory framework

Homeschool laws & regulatory framework in the United Kingdom

UK education law varies by nation. England (largest — where London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol sit) operates Section 7 Education Act 1996 (Elective Home Education) and Section 19 Education Act 1996 (local authority alternative provision duty). Scotland operates Section 30 Education (Scotland) Act 1980. Wales and Northern Ireland have similar frameworks.

England Section 7 Education Act 1996 — Elective Home Education (EHE)

Parents responsible for ensuring children receive "suitable education" — no specific curriculum required, no registration required to begin (though Schools Bill 2024 proposed statutory registration, status may vary in 2026). Local authority can make informal enquiries. Smartious meets "suitable education" standard as accredited international curriculum provider.

England Section 19 Education Act 1996 — Alternative Provision

Local authorities have STATUTORY duty to arrange education for children unable to attend mainstream school (medical, behavioural, exclusion, refuser). Smartious can serve these students directly (family funds) or potentially via local authority Alternative Provision commissioning arrangements (LA funds).

Scotland Section 30 Education (Scotland) Act 1980

Home education permitted; council permission required if withdrawing from a Scottish school. Smartious meets Scottish adequacy standard.

Wales and Northern Ireland

Similar frameworks to England — parental responsibility for education, no registration to begin, local authority enquiry powers.

Why families choose us

Why United Kingdom families choose Smartious

Reasons grounded in the realities of United Kingdom education — local school capacity constraints, corporate transfer and diplomatic timing, commute and logistics, currency stability, and the curriculum portability that mobile expat and dual-nationality families need.

1

Below all UK online school competitor pricing

Smartious USD 2,160-6,480/year (~£1,700-£5,100/year) vs Cambridge Home School Online (£10,950/year secondary), King's InterHigh (£8,000-15,000/year), My Online Schooling (£10,000+/year), InterHigh (£6,000+/year). Wolsey Hall Oxford at £4,000-£7,000/year is comparable on price but self-paced only — Smartious offers LIVE small-group classes at this fee point.

2

Elective Home Education (EHE) compatibility across UK nations

Meets Section 7 Education Act 1996 (England), Section 30 Education (Scotland) Act 1980, and Wales/NI equivalents. Documented curriculum suitable for local authority enquiry response.

3

Section 19 alternative provision partnership potential

Local authorities have statutory duty to arrange education for children unable to attend mainstream school. Smartious can serve directly or via local authority commissioning.

4

SEND-appropriate small live groups

Live classes 4-6 students (tighter than CHS Online's ≤10) provide small-group learning environment for neurodivergent students. Structured routine, low sensory load, camera-optional participation.

5

UK independent school fee arbitrage

Traditional UK independent schools £15,000-£52,000+/year (London day £26,000-£30,000+, London boarding £48,000-£52,000+, regional day £15,000-£30,000+). Smartious ~£1,700-£5,100/year with identical Cambridge / IB / American qualifications and UCAS pathway to Oxbridge / Russell Group.

6

Portable curriculum for UK families temporarily abroad

Forces personnel, international contractors, diplomatic British Embassy families continue Cambridge / A-Level trajectory seamlessly through overseas postings.

7

Private candidate 16-18+ retake pathway

Students needing to retake IGCSE or A-Level as private candidates after age 16 access structured live delivery rather than self-study alone.

8

Ontario OSSD pathway

UK families targeting Canadian U15 (Toronto, McGill, UBC, McMaster, Waterloo, Western, Queen's) complete Ontario Secondary School Diploma via CCIS partnership — apply via OUAC as Ontario secondary graduate.

How universities verify qualifications

Universities verify Cambridge International, Pearson Edexcel, IB Diploma and American AP qualifications directly with the issuing examination boards through standard verification services — Cambridge International Verification of Awards, Pearson's Verification of Results, the IB Organisation's verification service, and the College Board AP Score Reporting service. The qualification's credibility comes from the examination board itself, which is why these qualifications are equally valid whether earned at a physical school or through Smartious.

FAQs

Common questions from United Kingdom families

How does Smartious compare to Cambridge Home School Online (CHS Online) — the UK online school market leader?+

CHS Online (£10,950/year secondary, £6,099/year prep, live classes ≤10 pupils, Cambridge UK-based, ISI accredited, Oxbridge/Russell Group prep) is the UK's most-established online selective independent school. Smartious sits BELOW at USD 2,160-6,480/year (~£1,700-£5,100/year) with LIVE small-group classes 4-6 pupils (tighter than CHS's ≤10) and cross-country cohort providing global peer network. Smartious does NOT hold UK ISI accreditation — for families specifically valuing UK-specific ISI status, CHS is the appropriate choice. Smartious qualifications (Cambridge IGCSE, A-Level, IB, AP, OSSD) are awarded by international examination boards regardless of school accreditation status and provide the same UCAS pathway.

How does Smartious compare to UK independent schools like Westminster, Eton, or Harrow?+

UK independent schools — Westminster (£30,000+/year day, London), Eton College (£52,000+/year boarding), Harrow (£48,000+/year boarding), St. Paul's (£30,000+/year), Manchester Grammar School (£30,000+/year) — provide physical campus premium British education with boarding, sport, arts, pastoral, and university preparation infrastructure. Smartious provides live online Cambridge / IB / American / OSSD at USD 2,160-6,480/year (~£1,700-£5,100/year) with identical qualifications, UCAS pathway including Oxbridge for elite candidates, and cross-country cohort. Fee arbitrage substantial; qualifications and university pathway identical.

We're Elective Home Education (EHE) family in England. Does Smartious meet the "suitable education" standard?+

Yes. England Section 7 Education Act 1996 makes parents responsible for "suitable education" — no specific curriculum required. Smartious as accredited international curriculum provider delivering Cambridge IGCSE, A-Level, IB Diploma, American AP, or Ontario OSSD meets this standard. Documented curriculum, contact hours, assessments, and progress reporting suitable for local authority enquiry response.

Our child cannot attend mainstream school (medical, behavioural, exclusion, refuser). Can our local authority commission Smartious under Section 19?+

Local authorities have STATUTORY duty under Section 19 Education Act 1996 to arrange education for children unable to attend mainstream school. Smartious can serve these students directly (family funds) or potentially via local authority Alternative Provision commissioning arrangements (LA funds). We can support Section 19 conversations with your local authority.

Where do UK students sit Cambridge IGCSE and A-Level examinations?+

Cambridge Assessment International Education has hundreds of authorised examination centres across the UK — private schools accepting external candidates, FE colleges, British Council venues (British Council London for example). Smartious handles examination registration logistics. Exam fees are separate from Smartious tuition and paid directly to examination centre (typically £80-£150 per subject entry).

What UK universities accept Cambridge IGCSE, A-Level, IB, and AP qualifications?+

All UK universities via UCAS accept Cambridge A-Level and IB Diploma (American AP case-dependent, typically requires SAT/ACT + AP portfolio). Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London, LSE, UCL, King's College London, Warwick, Bristol, Manchester, Edinburgh, Durham, Bath, Exeter, York, Southampton, Nottingham, Sheffield, Birmingham, Leeds, Newcastle, Cardiff, Belfast (rest of Russell Group).

Our child has SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities). Can Smartious accommodate?+

Smartious live small-group classes (4-6 students, tighter than CHS Online's ≤10) provide small-group learning environment many neurodivergent students need but mainstream schools cannot deliver at scale. Structured routine, low sensory load compared to physical classroom, camera-optional participation. However, we are not a specialist SEND provider — for students with EHCPs (Education, Health and Care Plans) or high-support-need SEND, please contact us to discuss specific needs.

We're Scottish family. Scotland uses CfE with Highers, not GCSE/A-Level. Why choose Cambridge via Smartious?+

Scottish universities admit primarily via UCAS with Highers / Advanced Highers, but Cambridge A-Level is directly UCAS-accepted for Scottish universities. Cambridge A-Level is essential for UK-outside-Scotland universities (Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, LSE, UCL, Russell Group) and directly recognised globally. Smartious serves Scottish families specifically preferring Cambridge / A-Level pathway.

We're UK Forces or expat family temporarily abroad. How does Smartious support continuity?+

UK Forces personnel, international contractors, diplomatic British Embassy families, and general expat rotations continue Cambridge / A-Level trajectory seamlessly through overseas postings. Return to UK maintains curriculum continuity for reintegration to UK schools or university pathway.

What internet speed does Smartious require in the UK?+

Sustained ~5-10 Mbps per student for live HD video conferencing. BT Fibre, Virgin Media, Sky Broadband, and Vodafone UK 5G residential broadband across UK cities routinely deliver 100+ Mbps. Rural UK areas with adequate ~10-50 Mbps broadband also supported.

Smartious worldwide

British students join a 14+ country global cohort

Live classes bring together students from across Africa, the Gulf, Europe and Asia. A United Kingdom student in our Year 11 IGCSE Mathematics class will be alongside peers in Cairo, Dubai, Bangkok, Seoul, Casablanca and Kigali. The Wednesday enrichment programmes (debate, Model UN, robotics, journalism) operate as one global classroom rather than thirteen separate national ones.

Book an assessment for your child

Two-gate admissions process. Submit the assessment request form — our Head of Admissions reviews every request within three business days. If accepted, the assessment fee is invoiced before the diagnostic is scheduled.

How the process works
  1. Submit the assessment request form. Full student and family details, curriculum interest, target universities. No payment at this stage.
  2. Admissions reviews the request. Our Head of Admissions evaluates fit against current cohort, year-group capacity, and curriculum alignment. We respond to every request within three business days regardless of decision.
  3. Assessment fee invoiced on acceptance. If the request is accepted, the family receives an invoice for the assessment fee. The fee is required before the diagnostic is scheduled, and is credited against the first month's tuition if the family proceeds to enrolment.
  4. Diagnostic assessment and curriculum recommendation. Structured testing across English, Mathematics and Science, written report, and a 30-minute consultation with the Head of Academics.
  5. Enrolment decision. Admission is determined on the basis of the assessment results, not the form alone. Families that are a good fit receive a formal enrolment offer; families that aren't receive an honest recommendation of better-suited alternatives.
