The current options

Most American homeschool platforms aren't actually schools.

They're video libraries. Pre-recorded lessons your child watches alone. Auto-graded quizzes. No teacher to ask when something doesn't make sense. No peers to learn alongside. And too often — content that feels three years behind what international curricula actually require.

"It feels too easy"

Parents repeatedly report that mainstream US homeschool curricula (Acellus, Time4Learning, even BJU) pace below international standards. Students who later attempt SAT/ACT or IGCSE feel under-prepared.

"My kid is alone all day"

Pre-recorded videos. Auto-graded quizzes. No live teacher. No classmates. Particularly hard on younger students and students who learn through discussion.

"No real college support"

Most US homeschool platforms hand off transcripts and walk away. UCAS, Common App, SAT prep, university interviews — figure it out yourself.

"Customer service nightmares"

BBB complaints about deleted records, altered grades, refusal to refund, and frequent unannounced price hikes plague the largest US providers.

"Religious worldview baked in"

BJU, Abeka, Veritas — all explicitly Christian. Wonderful for families who want that. A non-starter for families who don't.

"Where are the international options?"

Globally-mobile American families need credentials that travel. IGCSE and A-Level are recognised by every major university worldwide. Most US providers don't offer them.

Why Smartious

Built for families who refuse to compromise.

01

Live teachers, not videos

Every Smartious lesson has a real human teacher on the other end of the camera. 1-on-1 or small-group (3-6 students). Lessons are recorded for review, but the teaching itself is live, interactive, in real time.

02

Cambridge & IB rigour

IGCSE, A-Level, IB Diploma. The qualifications top US universities (Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Yale) recognise as evidence of internationally-elite preparation. Often weighted as advanced beyond AP.

03

Free college application support

Free for every enrolled family. UCAS for UK universities. Common App for US universities. OUAC for Canada. We help with personal statements, recommendation coordination, interview prep. No extra invoice.

04

Mshauri AI tutor — 24/7

The first AI homework helper trained on Cambridge, Edexcel, IB and American curricula. Voice, text, image — your child can photo a math problem and get guidance. Free in Premium Online tier.

05

Transparent pricing — in USD

Every fee published. No surprise increases. External examination fees are pass-through at the published Cambridge/Edexcel rate — Smartious adds only a $25 admin fee. 12% discount for annual payment. 15-25% sibling discount.

06

Real founder access

Smartious is founder-led. Alfred Ouko personally interviews every family who joins. If something breaks, you can WhatsApp the founder. No call centres. No outsourced support.

Live classes across US time zones

Our schedule fits your morning.

Most American families start school between 8am and noon local time. That maps perfectly to Smartious afternoon classes in Nairobi (EAT). We run dedicated US-family sessions Monday-Friday.

Questions American families ask

Frequently asked.

Will US universities accept IGCSE and A-Level grades?
Yes — and they often weight them favourably. Cambridge IGCSE and A-Level are recognised by Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Yale, every Ivy League school, and the entire UC and Cal State systems. A-Levels are commonly compared to AP, and top universities increasingly view them as more rigorous than US high school + AP combinations.
Is Smartious accredited in the United States?
Smartious is not currently US-accredited (we are pursuing Cognia accreditation, which typically takes 12-18 months). However, our students sit external Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel examinations — and Cambridge International Education and Pearson Edexcel are accredited examination boards recognised globally, including by every US university. Your child's qualification comes from Cambridge/Pearson, not from Smartious.
Can my child still take the SAT or ACT?
Absolutely. SAT and ACT are independent of curriculum — your child can sit them at any US testing centre. We offer SAT and ACT preparation as part of our test prep programme (separate from the homeschool curriculum, $450 for full prep package).
What about state homeschool reporting requirements?
Each US state has different homeschool laws. Some states (like Idaho, Texas, Alaska) have minimal requirements. Others (like New York, Pennsylvania) require formal notification and annual reporting. Smartious provides everything you need: official letterhead, transcripts, progress reports, and standardised assessment results. We do not file paperwork on your behalf — but we provide everything you need to file.
How do US time zones work with classes in Nairobi?
Smartious afternoon and evening classes (3pm-10pm EAT) map to morning hours across all four US time zones — see the schedule table above. Most US families do Smartious classes between 9am-1pm Eastern, which is the natural morning school window. 1-on-1 tutoring is scheduled by mutual agreement and can flex to any time.
Do you offer AP courses?
AP courses are on our curriculum roadmap for the 2026-2027 academic year (launching August 2026). We currently focus on Cambridge IGCSE, A-Level, and IB Diploma as our core international qualifications. American students interested in AP can complement Smartious with US-based AP self-study (College Board, Khan Academy AP, etc.) and we will help coordinate AP exam registration.
How does pricing compare to mainstream US homeschool options?
Smartious Premium Online ($260/month, $2,746/year with annual discount) sits between Acellus Basic ($249/month, $2,400/year) and the premium live-class providers like Veritas Press Scholars Academy ($400+/month). For genuine live teaching with international rigour, Smartious is 30-60% less than direct competitors like Cambridge Home School ($4,500+/year) or InterHigh ($5,200+/year).
Can I just enrol my child in one or two subjects?
Yes. Through Private Tuition you can purchase 1-on-1 tutoring in any single subject from $15/hour (Primary) to $28/hour (A-Level / IB). Useful for families who like their current curriculum but want supplementary support in maths, sciences, or specific subjects.
What happens if my child needs to return to a regular US school?
Smartious provides full transcripts in US-standard GPA format on request. Students moving from IGCSE to a US high school typically slot in at grade 10 or 11 with credit equivalency. We help families coordinate transcripts with receiving schools.
Do you offer a free trial?
We offer a free 30-minute consultation with our admissions team to determine fit. We also offer the placement assessment ($40) which includes one sample 60-minute lesson. We don't offer a longer free trial because our delivery model is intensive — committing a teacher's time to a student needs proper enrolment.
My child has dyslexia / ADHD / autism. Can Smartious help?
Yes. We offer Special Educational Needs (SEN) support at $50 per session with SEN-trained tutors. Initial $80 assessment determines the right pathway. We have experience with dyslexia, ADHD, autism spectrum, dyscalculia, and processing differences. Many SEN students struggle with the self-paced video model of mainstream US homeschool platforms — they often thrive with our 1-on-1 live model.
What if it doesn't work out?
Monthly billing requires no commitment beyond the current month — cancel anytime with 14 days' notice. Tuition for unused weeks is refundable pro-rata. Registration fees are non-refundable. We'd prefer to discuss any issues before you withdraw — we have a strong record of finding solutions when families raise concerns.
