IGCSE vs CBC — Which is Better for Your Child in 2026?

By Dr. David Maina, IGCSE tuition Kenya specialist, Smartious · April 2026 · 9 min read

Parents considering IGCSE tuition Kenya usually arrive with one urgent question: is IGCSE better than CBC? The honest answer is that they serve different goals. After teaching both curricula for over a decade, here is how I help families decide between them.

The fundamental difference

CBC is Kenya's national curriculum, aligned to Kenyan employment markets and local universities. IGCSE is an international curriculum from Cambridge Assessment International Education, aligned to global university admissions. CBC is competency-based; IGCSE is exam-based. That single distinction shapes everything else.

Assessment — exams vs continuous

CBC uses continuous assessment throughout each grade with national benchmarks at KPSEA (Grade 6), KJSEA (Grade 9), and KCSE (Grade 12). Projects, portfolios, and classwork all count. IGCSE is assessed almost entirely through written exams at the end of a 2-year course. A child who performs better under sustained effort might prefer CBC; a child who peaks under exam pressure might prefer IGCSE.

Content depth vs breadth

CBC is broader — it teaches Swahili, Kenyan history and geography, agriculture, home science, and integrated science alongside core academic subjects. IGCSE is narrower but deeper — each subject goes into more detailed analysis, with more challenging exam questions especially in Extended-tier papers.

Recognition abroad

This is where IGCSE wins decisively. Every major international university knows what an IGCSE is. A student with 8 IGCSE grades of A–C can apply directly to UK sixth forms, US high schools for final year, Canadian grade 12, or progress to A-Level anywhere. A KCSE graduate applying to Oxford must typically do a foundation year first. For homeschool Kenya families with international ambitions, this is the deciding factor.

Recognition at home

CBC and KCSE are the default route to Kenyan universities — University of Nairobi, Kenyatta, Strathmore, Moi, JKUAT. IGCSE grades are also accepted by all these institutions using published equivalency tables, but the process is slightly more administrative. If your child will stay in Kenya for university and career, CBC is the cleaner path.

Difficulty — which is harder?

Neither is uniformly harder. IGCSE mathematics and sciences are harder than CBC at the same age because they go into more rigorous detail. CBC's creative and life-skills subjects are harder for academic-focused students because they require sustained project work. A diligent student can score top grades in either; a struggling student will struggle in both.

Cost difference

IGCSE tuition Kenya is more expensive than CBC tuition — roughly KES 55,000–75,000/month vs KES 25,000–55,000/month for homeschoolers. The gap reflects higher teacher qualifications, licensed Cambridge materials, and exam fees at international centres (roughly KES 8,500 per IGCSE subject vs KES 1,800 per KCSE subject). For a family committed to international university, the IGCSE premium is worth it. For a family staying local, CBC is the better value.

Can a child do both?

Yes, and some ambitious families do. The child sits KCSE in December of Grade 12 and IGCSE the following May/June. This doubles the workload in the final year and should only be attempted by strong academic students with a specific reason. Most families pick one and stick with it.

The switch point

If you are considering switching from CBC to IGCSE, the optimal point is at Grade 8 or 9. Before Grade 8 the curricula are broadly similar. After Grade 10 switching becomes disruptive because the child has invested in CBC's assessment structure. We regularly transition students at Grade 8 or 9 and the adjustment takes about 3 months of targeted support.

IGCSE is better if your family's future is international. CBC is better if your family's future is Kenyan. Both produce excellent students when taught well. The wrong answer is to switch multiple times or to pick based on prestige alone.
