Most AI tutors on the market today were trained on American exam boards, using American pedagogy, and priced in American dollars. They do not know what CBC is. They do not recognise KCSE past papers. They stumble over Swahili terms. We built Mshauri to be different.
Mshauri is Swahili for "advisor" or "counsellor" — the word a student uses when they need guidance, not lecturing. That spirit is the core of how the tutor responds: it asks before it tells, it listens before it corrects, and it treats the student as a capable learner who just needs the right question.
A typical AI chatbot, when asked "What is the hypotenuse of a 3-4 triangle?", will answer "5" and move on. Mshauri answers: "Before I tell you, can you draw the triangle? Good. What is the name of the longest side?" The goal is to leave the student able to solve the next question on their own — not to produce an answer they will forget in an hour.
Mshauri has been trained on the last 10 years of Cambridge, Edexcel, IB, and KCSE past papers. It knows which topics carry the most marks, which years had the hardest Paper 2, and which subtopics are repeated every sitting. When you ask it to help with a topic, it will often suggest the specific past paper question to practice on.
Students can code-switch freely. Mshauri responds fluently in English, Swahili, and Sheng, and will translate any concept into either language on request. This matters for KCSE biology and geography, where technical Swahili vocabulary is part of the exam.
Parents receive a weekly digest of what their child has studied, how long they have studied, and which topics Mshauri flagged as needing a human tutor's attention. We never show or store student chat content beyond what is needed for the digest. Mshauri is supervised software, not a free-running chatbot.
All Smartious students get Mshauri access as part of their package — Basic Online plans get 20 guided sessions a month, Premium and above get unlimited access. It is not sold separately, because it only works when paired with a real human tutor who can intervene when the AI hits its limits.
Mshauri is not a replacement for a great teacher. It is the thing that lets a great teacher support 30 students instead of 3.
