Botswana high school students preparing for BGCSE or IGCSE benefit substantially from private tutoring. Identifying quality tutors in a small market is the challenge. Here is the approach in 2026.
University of Botswana final-year and graduate students (strong for foundational subjects). Retired government teachers with BGCSE experience. Mission school teachers moonlighting. Specialist centres in Gaborone (limited but growing).
Where local specialist tutors are scarce, online international tutors fill the gap completely. Cambridge-trained tutors from the UK, SA, and Kenya are accessible from any Botswana city with reliable internet.
University-student tutors: BWP 80–180/hour. Qualified teachers: BWP 150–300/hour. Specialist exam tutors: BWP 250–500/hour. Online international (Smartious): personalized quotes on enrolment.
Bachelor's degree certificate. Recent teaching experience at BGCSE or IGCSE level. Two references from other Gaborone or Francistown families. A 60-minute trial session. Written agreement on rate, schedule, and cancellation.
Mathematics (BGCSE and IGCSE), Physical Science, Biology, English Language, Setswana (locally only), Development Studies, Accounting. Computer Studies is growing as a demand area.
Group tutoring of 3–5 students works well in Gaborone where several students from the same class need the same subject support. Usually costs BWP 80–150 per student per hour. Good value for routine reinforcement; less ideal for targeted exam prep.
Botswana's tutor market is smaller than SA or Kenya but growing. Combine local in-person tutors for routine support with online international specialists for exam preparation. This hybrid approach gives best value in Gaborone, Francistown, and other Botswana cities.
A few in Gaborone. Quality varies. Online international platforms offer better vetting for most subjects.
Some can teach both but usually specialise in one. For exam-focused preparation, prefer a specialist.
For Grade 9+ and reliable internet, online is equal or better. For primary students, in-person usually wins.
