January 2027 Intake in the UAE: Online School From 5 January
By Alfred Ouko, Founder · October 2026 · 8 min read
The winter break is when many UAE families make a change: a move between emirates, a new job, a return from abroad, or a decision that the current school is not working. Smartious Term 2 begins on Monday 5 January 2027, and families in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the northern emirates who apply by December can have their child placed and ready for the first live lesson. This guide covers the Gulf timetable, the curricula UAE families choose, fees in dirhams, and the recognition questions you should think about before you enrol.
Smartious for families in Dubai and the UAE
- Online school in Dubai — Full-time live classes and homeschooling, IGCSE to A-Level and IB
- Online tutors in Dubai — 1-on-1 tuition in IGCSE, A-Level and IB subjects
- Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the rest of the UAE — Every emirate we teach in
Why January suits UAE families
Most UAE private schools run a September to July year, with a second term starting in early January after the winter break. Families who decide during the first term that they need a change can move at the break rather than mid-term. January also suits families arriving in the UAE over the holidays who have not yet secured a school place, and families who want a period of online schooling while they wait for a place at a preferred school. Our January start means your child joins a class on its first day, at the right level.
Gulf timetable
The UAE is four hours ahead of GMT and one hour ahead of our teachers in Nairobi. A lesson at 9am in Nairobi is at 10am in Dubai. Our timetables for UAE families sit inside a normal school day, Monday to Friday, which fits the UAE’s Saturday and Sunday weekend. We send the full weekly timetable in UAE time before you accept a place.
What a school day looks like
A typical day for a secondary student starts with registration and a first live lesson in the UAE morning, followed by a timetable of subject lessons with breaks between them, much like a school day but without the commute. Teachers set homework through the learning platform and mark it, and students message teachers with questions between lessons. Younger children have shorter lessons and more breaks, and need an adult nearby to help them settle and stay on task. Parents receive written reports and can speak to teachers about progress. Many families use the time saved on the school run for sport, swimming, music or Arabic lessons in the afternoon, which helps a child learning at home stay active and social.
Curricula UAE families choose
Most of our UAE families follow the British route: Cambridge Primary and Lower Secondary, then IGCSE and AS and A Level, with Pearson Edexcel options. We also teach IB and American programmes. Students sit Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel exams as private candidates at authorised centres such as the British Council in the UAE. Exam centres set their own registration windows and fees, so check them early if your child is in Year 10 or above.
Fees in dirhams
Fees start from USD 423 a month for Primary, payable termly, and vary by curriculum and level. The dirham is pegged at AED 3.6725 to the dollar, so USD 423 is about AED 1,553 a month (approximate, October 2026). One-to-one tuition is USD 15 an hour, about AED 55. Exam entry fees are paid separately to the exam centre. Fees are non-refundable once the assessment is done, the timetable has been created and lessons have started. Our UAE fees guide sets out the figures in more detail.
Recognition: what to check first
If your child may return to a UAE school or apply to a UAE university, think about recognition before you enrol anywhere. Dubai’s KHDA and Abu Dhabi’s ADEK regulate private schools in their emirates, and the UAE Ministry of Education handles certificate equivalency. Smartious does not claim approval or licensing from KHDA, ADEK or the Ministry. What matters for most families is the qualification: Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel results from an authorised exam centre, and whether they meet the Ministry’s equivalency rules. Read the current rules on moe.gov.ae and check with the school or university your child may join. Our guide to recognition in the UAE explains this carefully.
Placement and onboarding
Message admissions on WhatsApp at +254 745 021 212. We arrange an online placement assessment, review your child’s reports, recommend a class and send the timetable and termly invoice. Bring any transfer certificate or report from a UAE school to the assessment, because it helps us place your child and helps you later if they return to a UAE school. Your child receives a login and a short onboarding session before term begins.
Checklist before 5 January
Apply by December. Keep copies of every report and transfer document. Set up a laptop with a webcam and headset and a quiet place to learn. If your child is in an exam year, ask us about British Council dates at the same time as you apply. And if a return to a UAE school is likely, ask that school now what it will need to see when your child applies.
If the winter break is your moment to change, apply by December and your child can start on 5 January 2027 on a Gulf timetable. Message admissions on WhatsApp at +254 745 021 212 or email hello@smartioushomeschool.com.
