Regulatory framework

Homeschool laws & regulatory framework in the India

India's Right to Education Act 2009 mandates compulsory education for children aged 6-14 but does NOT explicitly regulate homeschooling — homeschool exists in a legal gray area, practically permitted.

Right to Education Act 2009

India's Right to Education Act 2009 (RTE Act) mandates compulsory education for children aged 6-14 through recognised schools. The Act does NOT explicitly regulate or prohibit homeschooling — homeschool exists in a legal gray area, practically permitted for families choosing this pathway.

CBSE / ICSE / State board / Cambridge / IB coexist

India recognises multiple education boards — CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education, national dominant), ICSE (Indian Certificate of Secondary Education, Anglo-Indian roots), State boards (Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, etc.), Cambridge International (IGCSE + A-Level, growing at premium tier), IB Diploma (elite tier). Association of Indian Universities recognises Cambridge A-Level as CBSE-equivalent for Indian university entry (JEE, NEET, CUET admission channels).

Smartious meets Indian recognition standards

Smartious as accredited international curriculum provider delivers Cambridge IGCSE, A-Level, IB Diploma, American AP, or Ontario OSSD — all recognised by Association of Indian Universities and directly recognised by international university admissions (UK UCAS, US Common Application, Canadian OUAC, Australian direct entry).

Pre-primary and secondary unrestricted

Children under 6 (pre-primary) and 15+ (post-RTE Act mandatory age) are unrestricted for all Indian families. Cambridge IGCSE Years 10-11 (ages 14-16 typically), A-Level Years 12-13 (ages 16-18), IB Diploma (ages 16-19) are the core Smartious India delivery window and legally straightforward.

How universities verify qualifications

Universities verify Cambridge International, Pearson Edexcel, IB Diploma and American AP qualifications directly with the issuing examination boards through standard verification services — Cambridge International Verification of Awards, Pearson's Verification of Results, the IB Organisation's verification service, and the College Board AP Score Reporting service. The qualification's credibility comes from the examination board itself, which is why these qualifications are equally valid whether earned at a physical school or through Smartious.

Why families trust Smartious

Eight reasons Indian families choose Smartious

Each reason is grounded in something verifiable — not in marketing claims.

Experienced international educators

Subject-specific degree-qualified teaching staff with cumulative experience across Cambridge International, Pearson Edexcel, IB Diploma and American Curriculum. Many hold advanced teaching credentials including PGCE, Cambridge PDT certification, or national teaching registration in their home jurisdiction.

Personalised learning plans

Every student begins with an initial assessment. The learning plan that follows is tailored to academic level, subject preferences, target universities and family situation — not a one-size-fits-all schedule.

Academic assessments

Initial diagnostic assessment. Weekly informal assessment within classes. Monthly formal assessments. Mock examinations under timed conditions during IGCSE and A-Level years. Results inform teaching adjustments.

Small class sizes

Online tier classes have four to six students. Online Plus has smaller groups. Premium is one-on-one. Class size affects individual attention, question response time, and student speaking time during class.

Progress monitoring

Weekly parent dashboards showing attendance and assessment results. Monthly written subject reports from each teacher. Termly comprehensive reports covering academic progress, study habits and university preparation.

Parent communication

We're NRI family returning from Dubai/Doha/Riyadh/UK/US. How does Smartious support curriculum continuity?+

Very common Indian family situation. NRI returnee families with children in Cambridge IGCSE, A-Level, IB Diploma from Gulf (UAE DIS/DESS/GEMS/Nord Anglia, Saudi British International, Qatar British International, Kuwait American, Oman BSM), UK (Cambridge Home School Online, private schools), or US (American schools abroad, US public schools) continue seamlessly with Smartious — same Cambridge / IB curriculum without disruption. Avoids CBSE/ICSE conversion that would set student back 1-2 years. UCAS / Common App / OUAC university pathway maintained.

Is homeschool legally permitted in India?+

Yes. India's Right to Education Act 2009 (RTE Act) mandates compulsory education for children aged 6-14 through recognised schools but does NOT explicitly regulate or prohibit homeschooling — homeschool exists in a legal gray area, practically permitted. Smartious as accredited international curriculum provider delivers Cambridge / IB / American / OSSD qualifications recognised by Association of Indian Universities and international destinations.

Can we combine Smartious international curriculum with JEE / NEET / CAT preparation for Indian universities?+

Yes. Cambridge A-Level provides strong academic foundation for Indian competitive entrance preparation — A-Level Physics + Chemistry + Mathematics supports JEE Main/Advanced for IIT; A-Level Biology + Chemistry + Physics supports NEET for AIIMS medical entry; A-Level Economics + Business supports CAT for IIM. Some Indian families use Smartious as primary academic pathway with dedicated JEE / NEET / CAT coaching in parallel via specialist Indian coaching institutes (Aakash, Allen, FIITJEE, Resonance).

We're in tier-2 city (Ahmedabad / Chandigarh / Jaipur / Kochi / Coimbatore / Nagpur / Indore). Does Smartious serve us?+

Yes. Smartious extends full Cambridge / IB / American / OSSD access to tier-2 cities without local Cambridge/IB physical schools. Live online delivery works via residential fibre infrastructure across all Indian tier-2 cities. Cambridge examinations sit at British Council venues or nearest metro authorised centres.

Where do Indian students sit Cambridge IGCSE and A-Level examinations?+

Book an assessment for your child

Two-gate admissions process. Submit the assessment request form — our Head of Admissions reviews every request within three business days. If accepted, the assessment fee is invoiced before the diagnostic is scheduled.

How the process works
  1. Submit the assessment request form. Full student and family details, curriculum interest, target universities. No payment at this stage.
  2. Admissions reviews the request. Our Head of Admissions evaluates fit against current cohort, year-group capacity, and curriculum alignment. We respond to every request within three business days regardless of decision.
  3. Assessment fee invoiced on acceptance. If the request is accepted, the family receives an invoice for the assessment fee. The fee is required before the diagnostic is scheduled, and is credited against the first month's tuition if the family proceeds to enrolment.
  4. Diagnostic assessment and curriculum recommendation. Structured testing across English, Mathematics and Science, written report, and a 30-minute consultation with the Head of Academics.
  5. Enrolment decision. Admission is determined on the basis of the assessment results, not the form alone. Families that are a good fit receive a formal enrolment offer; families that aren't receive an honest recommendation of better-suited alternatives.
