Why study in Netherlands
Largest English-medium offering in continental Europe
Over 2,000 English-taught Bachelor's and Master's programmes — more than any other non-English-speaking European country. Dutch universities lead Europe in English-medium internationalisation.
Top-ranked universities at affordable tuition
TU Delft (top 75 globally), Wageningen University (top 100 for agriculture/environment, sometimes top globally), Utrecht (top 100), Leiden (top 100), Erasmus Rotterdam (top 100). Tuition €8,000-20,000/year — significantly less than UK, US, Australia.
Innovative teaching: problem-based learning
Dutch universities pioneered problem-based learning (PBL) — small-group work tackling real-world challenges rather than traditional lectures. Strong on critical thinking, collaboration and applied problem-solving. Particularly distinctive at Maastricht University.
1-year Orientation Year visa post-study
After completing your Dutch degree, you can apply for the Orientation Year (Zoekjaar) — a 1-year residence permit during which you can stay in the Netherlands to seek skilled employment with full work rights. Successful job seekers transition to the Highly Skilled Migrant visa.
Wageningen and agricultural specialisation
Wageningen University is consistently ranked #1 globally for Agriculture & Forestry. For Kenyan students interested in agriculture, food science, environmental sciences, or sustainability — particularly relevant to African development — Wageningen is exceptional.
Excellent English fluency in Dutch society
Netherlands consistently ranks #1 globally on English proficiency among non-native countries. Daily life, services, and even informal interactions can be conducted entirely in English — making integration smoother for international students.

Frequently asked questions
Is Smartious Study Abroad free for Dutch applications?
Yes — completely free for students.
Can I study in the Netherlands in English?
Yes — comprehensively. The Netherlands offers 2,000+ English-taught Bachelor's and Master's programmes. At the international level, most programmes are delivered in English. You don't need to speak Dutch to study, though basic Dutch helps with daily life.
How much does it cost to study in the Netherlands?
For non-EU international students, tuition typically €8,000-20,000/year (research universities) or €7,500-12,000/year (universities of applied sciences). Living costs €10,800-15,000/year (Amsterdam most expensive). Total annual cost €19,000-35,000 — affordable compared to UK/US/Australia.
What's the difference between Dutch research universities and universities of applied sciences?
Research universities (e.g., TU Delft, Utrecht, Leiden) focus on academic and research-oriented education — most directly comparable to UK/US universities. Universities of applied sciences (Hogeschool e.g. Saxion, HvA, Inholland) focus on professional, applied education with practical industry orientation — more comparable to UK polytechnics. Both qualify graduates for the post-study Orientation Year visa.
What's special about Wageningen University?
Wageningen University is consistently ranked #1 globally for Agriculture & Forestry, and frequently top globally for Environmental Sciences and Food Sciences. For Kenyan students interested in agricultural science, food security, sustainability, environmental policy — areas particularly relevant to African development — Wageningen offers world-leading expertise and active African student communities.
What KCSE grade do I need for Dutch universities?
Most Dutch research universities require KCSE B+ (Plus) and above. Top programmes (medicine, top business, TU Delft engineering) typically expect KCSE A- (Minus). Universities of applied sciences are more flexible — KCSE B (Plain) is often sufficient. Strong subject grades for chosen programme matter more than overall mean grade.
What is Studielink?
Studielink is the Dutch central application portal — like UCAS in the UK. You create a single Studielink account and apply to your chosen Dutch programmes through it. You can apply to up to 4 numerus fixus programmes (selective entry) and unlimited regular programmes via Studielink.
What's numerus fixus?
Numerus fixus programmes are selective-entry programmes with a fixed number of places — typically medicine, psychology, dentistry and some specialist programmes. Selection is based on lottery + grades + sometimes additional tests. Deadlines for numerus fixus applications are earlier (January 15) than regular programmes (May 1).
Can I work while studying in the Netherlands?
Yes — international students can work 16 hours/week year-round OR full-time during summer (June-August). Wages typically €10-14/hour. Your employer applies for a work permit for you (TWV) for the first job; subsequent jobs don't need TWV.
What's the Orientation Year visa?
The Orientation Year (Zoekjaar) is a 1-year residence permit granted to graduates of Dutch universities. During this year you can stay in the Netherlands, work for any employer, and seek skilled graduate-level employment. Successful job seekers transition to the Highly Skilled Migrant visa for long-term Dutch residence.
How does the Netherlands lead to permanent residence?
After 5 years of legal residence in the Netherlands (which includes student years + Orientation Year + Highly Skilled Migrant years), you can apply for permanent residence. After permanent residence + total 5 years legal residence, you can apply for Dutch citizenship — though you typically must renounce other citizenship (Netherlands generally doesn't allow dual citizenship).
Why is the Netherlands a good choice for Kenyan students?
Combination of: (1) tuition more affordable than UK/US/Australia, (2) entire international programme delivered in English, (3) excellent English speaking in daily life, (4) strong post-study visa pathway, (5) globally recognised universities at moderate tuition, (6) central European location enabling weekend travel across the EU. Particularly strong for engineering, agriculture, sciences and business.
