SAT preparation: Scholastic Assessment Test

Digital SAT preparation for US university admissions and merit scholarships

The SAT is the primary standardised test for US university undergraduate admissions. The Digital SAT (launched internationally March 2023, fully digital US March 2024) is shorter (2 hours 14 minutes), adaptive by module, and entirely computer-based. Smartious offers structured 40-session Digital SAT preparation covering both sections — Reading & Writing and Math — with focus on the strategies and pacing that move students from baseline scores to merit-scholarship-competitive scores (1400+).

Who it is for

Reading and Writing (64 minutes, 2 modules of 32 minutes each)

Module-adaptive. Module 1 has a mix of difficulty; Module 2 difficulty is determined by Module 1 performance. Tests reading comprehension, vocabulary in context, standard English conventions (grammar), and expression of ideas. 27 questions per module.

Math (70 minutes, 2 modules of 35 minutes each)

Module-adaptive (same logic as Reading & Writing). Calculator IS allowed throughout the Math section in Digital SAT (Desmos graphing calculator built into the test interface). Tests algebra, advanced math, problem-solving and data analysis, geometry and trigonometry. 22 questions per module.

Frequently asked questions

What changed in the Digital SAT?

The Digital SAT (introduced internationally March 2023, fully digital US March 2024) is significantly shorter (2h 14m vs 3h legacy SAT), entirely digital (taken on a laptop using College Board's Bluebook app), module-adaptive (your performance on Module 1 affects Module 2 difficulty), and uses Desmos graphing calculator built into the test interface for Math. The scoring scale (400-1600) is unchanged.

How is the SAT scored?

Each of the two sections (Reading & Writing, Math) is scored 200-800. Total composite score is the sum, ranging from 400 to 1600. Most universities focus on composite score, though some look at section scores separately for STEM or humanities programmes.

What's a competitive SAT score?

Score requirements vary widely by university. 1200+ opens many US university doors. 1400+ is competitive for top 50 US universities. 1500+ is competitive for top 20 (Ivy League and equivalent). 1550+ approaches the score required for the most selective programmes (Caltech, MIT, Harvard, Stanford).

SAT or ACT — which test should I take?

Both are accepted equally by US universities. SAT is more widely taken internationally and is more popular in Kenya. ACT has a Science section that SAT doesn't — favoured by some students with strong science backgrounds. We default to SAT preparation unless a student specifically prefers ACT.

How long should I prepare for the SAT?

Most students benefit from 3-4 months of focused preparation. Our 40-session programme spans 12-16 weeks at 2-3 sessions per week. Students with weak foundations (1000-1100 baseline) may benefit from 6+ months and additional self-study.

Is SAT essay still required?

No — the SAT Essay was discontinued in June 2021. The current Digital SAT has no essay component. Some universities require additional writing samples through application essays instead.

Can I take SAT in Kenya?

Yes — SAT is administered approximately 7 times per year in Kenya, primarily at International School of Kenya (ISK) in Westlands, with additional authorised centres for specific test dates. We help students register for the appropriate test date.

Are SAT and AP scores treated similarly?

No — different purposes. SAT is the standardised admissions test (taken by virtually all US university applicants). AP (Advanced Placement) examinations test subject-specific knowledge for potential college credit. Students applying to top US universities typically take BOTH the SAT and several AP subject examinations.

Do you support NCAA athletic scholarship pathways?

Yes — we have specific experience supporting Eldoret-based and other Kenyan student-athletes preparing for NCAA Division I scholarships. The SAT score is central to NCAA Initial Eligibility Certification. We integrate SAT preparation with NCAA recruiting documentation guidance.

Do you guarantee a specific SAT score?

No score guarantees. Students completing the full 40-session programme typically see 100-200 point improvement on the SAT 1600 scale. Outcomes depend on starting level, effort and test-day performance.

Can I retake the SAT?

Yes — there's no formal limit on SAT retakes. Most students who don't hit their target score on the first attempt take it 2-3 times. Universities typically use the highest score, or "superscore" the best section scores across multiple attempts.
