Frequently asked questions

How much does tuition cost in Nairobi?

Online tuition is USD 8 per hour (≈ KSh 1,040 at current rates). Home tuition starts from KSh 1,500 per 1-hour session including tutor transport for closer areas, increasing for more distant estates (Runda, Karen, Kitengela). Exam-prep intensive packages and SAT preparation are USD 8–15/hour depending on the specialism required. 10-hour blocks attract a 5% discount.

How quickly can a tutor start?

For online tuition, typically within 24–48 hours of confirming the subject, level and schedule. For home tuition, 48–72 hours to match a tutor with the right subject and location. Specialist subjects (IB Diploma, A-Level Further Maths) may take 3–5 days to match optimally.

Do you offer KCSE revision tutoring?

Yes — KCSE revision is one of our most-requested services. We cover Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, Sciences and Humanities for Form 3 and Form 4 students. Sustained weekly tuition over 6–9 months typically produces the strongest grade improvements.

Do you offer IGCSE tutors in Nairobi?

Yes — Cambridge IGCSE and Pearson Edexcel International are core specialisms. Our IGCSE tutors hold subject degrees and have prepared students for both exam boards. Mathematics, Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology), English, Business Studies and Economics are the most-requested IGCSE subjects.

Do you offer A-Level and IB Diploma tutoring?

Yes — including A-Level Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, Business Studies, and IB Diploma equivalents (Maths AA, Maths AI, Sciences, Economics, Business Management). We also support IB internal assessments (IAs), the extended essay (EE) and theory of knowledge (TOK).

Can you help with university applications?

Yes — we support UCAS (UK), Common App (USA), and direct applications to universities in Canada, Australia, South Africa and the Gulf. This includes personal statement coaching, essay editing, interview preparation and standardised test prep (SAT, ACT). USD 15/hour for one-on-one admissions counselling.

Are your tutors safeguarding-checked?

Yes — every Smartious tutor undergoes our internal safeguarding review including reference checks, identity verification and a teaching demonstration before any contact with a student. We follow safeguarding protocols modelled on UK and international standards.

Can a tutor visit a home anywhere in Nairobi?

We send tutors to 20 specific neighbourhoods across Nairobi (see the area grid above). For each neighbourhood, the transport contribution is set based on distance. For estates outside our standard service area, online tuition is the practical option — the quality is identical and there's no scheduling risk from traffic.

What happens after I submit an assessment request?

Our Head of Admissions reviews your request within three business days. If accepted, you receive an invoice for the assessment fee. After payment, the diagnostic assessment is scheduled: a structured evaluation across English, Mathematics and Science (approx 90 minutes), a written report with subject-specific recommendations, and a 30-minute consultation with the Head of Academics. Enrolment is offered on the basis of assessment results.
