Frequently asked questions

How does Ontario's Letter of Intent homeschool law work?

Ontario's Education Act Section 21(2)(a) treats home instruction as legally equivalent to school attendance. Submit a one-time Letter of Intent to your local school board when starting homeschool. No annual renewal, no curriculum approval, no testing required. Most Ontario families also join Ontario Federation of Teaching Parents (OFTP) for community support, though OFTP membership is optional.

How much does Smartious cost for Ontario families in CAD?

Tuition starts from USD 423 per month, roughly 545 CAD at current exchange, and the exact figure depends on the pathway, the year group and the subjects your child takes. Request pricing through the enrolment form and we send the full structure the same day. Compared to Canadian private schools, families typically pay a small fraction of the cost for live qualified teachers, recorded lessons, marked work and termly reports.

Is Smartious recognized by UofT, McMaster, Waterloo, and Queen's?

Yes. University of Toronto, McMaster, Waterloo, Queen's, Western, Ottawa, York, TMU (Ryerson), and Guelph all accept Cambridge IGCSE and A-Level qualifications. Waterloo Engineering and UofT Engineering particularly value Cambridge Further Mathematics A-Level. We provide free OUAC (Ontario Universities' Application Centre) support, university essay guidance, and recommendation letters from your teaching team.

What's the live class schedule for Ontario families on Eastern Time?

Live classes run 8 AM – 5 PM Eastern Time, Monday through Friday — aligned with Ontario school hours. Toronto GTA families often choose morning core blocks (8–11 AM ET) for Mathematics, English, and Sciences, leaving afternoons for sports (hockey, basketball, soccer), music lessons, or GTA museums/galleries. All sessions are recorded for review.

Can my Ontario child do Cambridge IGCSE/A-Level instead of OSSD (Ontario curriculum)?

Yes. Ontario universities accept Cambridge IGCSE and A-Level qualifications as equivalent to OSSD requirements for admission. Some Ontario families do both — Cambridge IGCSE for academic depth plus OSSD credits through Ontario Virtual School or supplementary providers. UofT, McMaster Health Sciences, and Waterloo Engineering particularly welcome Cambridge-strengthened applications.
