Learn Kiswahili (Kiswahili)
East Africa's lingua franca, an African Union working language, and growing globally
Kiswahili is the most strategically important African language and one of the world's fastest-growing languages. It's the official language of Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo; an official language of the African Union, East African Community, Southern African Development Community; and increasingly studied as a foreign language at universities worldwide. Kiswahili reaches 200+ million speakers across East and Central Africa, parts of Southern Africa, and growing diaspora communities. For Kenyan students, Kiswahili remains essential for KCSE, IGCSE Kiswahili, broader East African opportunities, and connection to African cultural identity.
- Speakers: 200M+ speakers across East and Central Africa
- Language family: Bantu language (with Arabic and Portuguese loanwords)
- Difficulty: Easy for English speakers (relatively simple grammar, regular phonetics)

Frequently asked questions
Why learn Kiswahili if I already live in Kenya?
Even Kenyan students often need focused Kiswahili coaching for: KCSE examination preparation (compulsory subject), strengthening grammar and composition skills, gaining fluency in formal Kiswahili (Sheng vs Sanifu), academic Kiswahili for university-level courses. Many Kenyan students grow up speaking informal Kiswahili but struggle with formal written Kiswahili required for KCSE A grades.
Can my diaspora child learn Kiswahili online?
Yes — this is one of our most common student profiles. Kenyan families in the UAE, UK, USA, Canada often want their children to maintain Kiswahili for family connection and cultural identity. We offer flexible online lessons across all timezones, age-appropriate programmes from ages 5+, and family-focused materials that engage with Kenyan culture.
Is Kiswahili difficult for non-African learners?
No — Kiswahili is one of the easier world languages for English speakers. Phonetics are highly regular (pronunciation follows spelling closely). Grammar is systematic (noun class system is complex initially but logical). No tones, no complex verb conjugations like Romance languages, no different writing system. Most international learners progress faster in Kiswahili than in French or Spanish.
Sanifu (Standard) or Mazungumzo (Conversational)?
For KCSE, IGCSE and academic purposes: Kiswahili Sanifu (Standard Kiswahili — formal). For daily conversation and travel: Kiswahili Mazungumzo (conversational, more relaxed). Our default is Sanifu for examination students, Mazungumzo for casual learners. We can teach both registers based on student needs.
What about Sheng?
Sheng is the urban Kenyan slang mixing Kiswahili, English and various local languages. It's linguistically interesting but NOT used in formal contexts (KCSE, work, academia). We don't teach Sheng as our primary focus, but we help students distinguish Sheng from formal Kiswahili — important for KCSE candidates who sometimes mistakenly use Sheng forms in formal writing.
Can international university Kiswahili students get tutoring?
Yes — we support international students taking Kiswahili at universities like SOAS London, Yale, UCLA, Harvard, or Hamburg. Our native-speaker tutors provide academic Kiswahili support, conversation practice and cultural context that complements university coursework.
Why is Kiswahili growing globally?
Several factors: African Union adopted Kiswahili as official working language (2022); growing economic integration across East Africa; African diaspora maintaining cultural identity; increased international interest in African languages and cultures; and Kiswahili's relative ease compared to other African languages. Universities worldwide increasingly offer Kiswahili.
Do you offer family rates?
Yes — for diaspora families wanting multiple children to learn Kiswahili, we offer family bundle pricing with shared materials and flexible scheduling. Particularly valued by Kenyan families in the UAE, UK, USA and Canada.
