Learn Portuguese (Português)

The official language of 9 countries across 4 continents — Brazil, Portugal, Angola, Mozambique and more

Portuguese is the official language of 9 countries across 4 continents — Brazil (210M speakers), Portugal (10M), Angola (35M), Mozambique (32M), Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe, Equatorial Guinea, and Timor-Leste. Portuguese opens significant opportunities in Brazilian business and academia (one of the world's largest economies and university systems), Lusophone Africa (Angola and Mozambique with strong economic ties to Kenya), and Portuguese EU membership pathways. The language exists in two main variants — Brazilian Portuguese (most widely spoken globally) and European Portuguese (Portugal and African Lusophone countries).

Why learn Portuguese

Brazil — world's 10th largest economy

Brazil is Latin America's largest economy and a member of BRICS. Growing Brazil-Africa trade and investment. Portuguese is essential for Brazilian business, university study (Universidade de São Paulo is top-50 globally), and Brazilian cultural engagement.

Lusophone Africa — Angola and Mozambique

Angola (Africa's 6th largest economy) and Mozambique have substantial trade with East Africa. Portuguese capability opens significant African business and diplomatic opportunities, particularly in mining, infrastructure and energy.

Portuguese EU citizenship pathway

Portugal offers one of Europe's most accessible citizenship pathways — 5 years of legal residence plus basic Portuguese (A2 level). Portuguese citizenship grants full EU rights across all 27 member states.

Easy for Spanish/French speakers

Portuguese shares 90%+ mutual intelligibility with Spanish in writing. Spanish speakers typically learn Portuguese in 50% of the time required for monolingual English speakers. For French speakers, Portuguese is also easier than starting fresh.

CPLP integration and Brazilian cultural reach

Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) provides integrated diplomatic and economic frameworks. Brazilian media, music (samba, bossa nova), film and literature have global reach.

Frequently asked questions

Brazilian or European Portuguese?

Depends on goals: (1) Brazilian Portuguese: most widely spoken globally (210M+ speakers), useful for Brazil business, Brazilian universities, Brazilian cultural engagement. (2) European Portuguese: Portugal and African Lusophone countries (Angola, Mozambique). Required for Portuguese citizenship and CAPLE certification. The variants are mutually intelligible but differ in pronunciation, some vocabulary and certain grammar features. We default to Brazilian Portuguese unless students specify European Portuguese.

How easy is Portuguese for English speakers?

Portuguese is Category I by US Foreign Service Institute — among the easiest world languages (alongside Spanish, Italian, French). Easier than French in pronunciation; comparable to Spanish in difficulty. Most learners reach conversational fluency in 600-800 hours.

I already speak Spanish — should I learn Portuguese?

Strongly recommended. Spanish and Portuguese share 90%+ written mutual intelligibility. Spanish speakers typically learn Portuguese in 250-350 hours (vs 600-800 hours from scratch). This is one of the highest-ROI language additions available.

Why is Portuguese strategic for African students?

Two main reasons: (1) Lusophone Africa — Angola (Africa's 6th largest economy) and Mozambique (with strong East African trade ties) speak Portuguese. African students with Portuguese can access these markets directly. (2) Brazil-Africa relations are expanding; Brazil offers university scholarships to African students and Portuguese capability is the entry requirement.

What about Portuguese citizenship?

Portugal offers Europe's most accessible citizenship pathway: 5 years of legal residence in Portugal + CAPLE A2 Portuguese proficiency = eligibility for Portuguese citizenship. Portuguese citizenship grants full EU rights — work, residence, voting across all 27 EU member states. We offer specific CAPLE A2 preparation for citizenship applicants.

Can I take Portuguese exams in Kenya?

CELPE-Bras and CAPLE are not currently administered in Kenya. The nearest centres are typically in South Africa, Mozambique, or directly in Brazil/Portugal. We help with logistics and timing for examination travel.

What's special about Brazilian Portuguese pronunciation?

Brazilian Portuguese has more open, melodic pronunciation than European Portuguese. Speakers often comment that Brazilian Portuguese sounds "musical." European Portuguese is more closed, with reduced vowels and a more guttural quality. We adjust pronunciation training based on student preference.

Can I learn Portuguese for Brazilian university?

Yes — Brazilian public universities (Universidade de São Paulo, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, UNICAMP) are excellent and tuition-free for everyone including international students. Entry typically requires CELPE-Bras Intermediate (B2 equivalent) or higher. We offer CELPE-Bras-focused programmes.
