Online School Fees in South Africa 2026: The Full Cost of an International Qualification
By Alfred Ouko, Founder · October 2026 · 10 min read
Fee comparisons for online schools in South Africa usually compare the wrong numbers. A monthly tuition figure tells you almost nothing until you know what kind of teaching it buys, which qualification it leads to and what it leaves out. Examination entries, the centre, travel to the centre, textbooks, devices and backup power can together add a meaningful share on top of tuition, and some of them are paid to other organisations entirely. This guide sets out every cost line, so that you can compare any two quotes on the same terms, including ours.
Three models, three price levels
Online schooling in South Africa comes in three broad models, and the price follows the model. Self-paced content providers sell access to lessons, notes and assessments, with tutor support on request; they are the least expensive and suit disciplined learners with a parent closely involved. Live online schools teach scheduled classes in real time with a subject teacher; they cost more because a teacher’s time is the main cost. Registered private schools with campuses or hybrid models sit at the top. None of these is better in the abstract. The question is which one your child needs, and whether the quote in front of you is the model you think you are buying.
Tuition: what to ask before you compare
Ask how many hours a week are taught live, by a subject specialist, in each subject; how many students are in a class; whether lessons are recorded; how work is marked and how quickly; and whether the fee is per subject, per package or per grade. A low monthly figure that buys mostly recorded content is a different product from a higher one that buys daily live teaching, and both are legitimate. Ask, too, whether the fee is fixed in rand or in a foreign currency, because a fee set in US dollars or pounds moves with the exchange rate.
Examination entries, paid to the centre
Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel examinations are sat at authorised examination centres, and the entry fees are paid to the centre, not to the school that teaches the subject. Centres set their own fees per subject per sitting, they rise each year, and late entries cost more. For a full IGCSE programme of six to eight subjects, followed by AS and A Level, the examination line is significant and should be budgeted from the start. Ask your centre for its current fee schedule and its entry deadlines; we help families find a centre and plan entries, but the fee schedule is the centre’s.
The costs nobody lists
Travel to the centre, which outside the metros can mean a flight or an overnight stay for each sitting. Textbooks and past papers, partly offset by digital materials. A reliable device for each learner, a headset and a webcam. Backup power and data: an uninterruptible power supply or inverter for the router and laptop, and a mobile data bundle as a second connection. Registration with your provincial education department is free, but if your child studies full-time at home it is a legal step to plan for. And university applications at the end, including the USAf exemption application for students without the NSC.
What Smartious costs
Our fees start from USD 423 a month for Primary, payable termly, which is about R 7,700 a month at a rate of around 18 rand to the dollar, and they vary by curriculum and level. That buys live classes taught by subject specialists in small groups, lessons recorded for rewatching, marked work and reports, and academic planning, including subject choices against the USAf exemption rules for families heading to South African universities. Many South African families take one to three subjects with us alongside their school, which costs a fraction of a full programme. Examination entry fees are separate and paid to the centre. We publish this so that a family can put our quote next to anyone else’s on the same lines.
How to compare two quotes fairly
Put each quote on a single page with the same rows: teaching model; live hours per subject per week; class size; qualification and examination board; who books the examination and where; examination fees and travel; materials; currency of the fee; and what happens if the family moves abroad. The cheapest line on that page is often not the cheapest total, and the most expensive is not always the best. The right answer is the one that buys the qualification your child needs, taught in the way your child learns.

Frequently asked questions
How much does online school cost in South Africa?
It depends on the model. Self-paced content providers are the least expensive, live online schools cost more because teaching time is the main cost, and registered private schools cost most. Add examination entries, paid to the centre, and the costs of devices, backup power and travel to the centre.
Are Cambridge exam fees included in tuition?
Usually not. Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel entries are paid to the authorised examination centre, which sets its own fees per subject per sitting. Ask your centre for its current schedule and entry deadlines.
What are Smartious fees in rand?
From USD 423 a month for Primary, payable termly, about R 7,700 at a rate of around 18 rand to the dollar; fees vary by curriculum and level. Examination entries are separate.
Is it cheaper to take Cambridge subjects alongside school?
Yes. Taking one to three Cambridge subjects live with us while staying at school for the NSC costs a fraction of a full programme, and it is the arrangement most South African families choose.
