Online School in Hong Kong: Excellent Schools, and Nowhere to Put Your Child in September

Hong Kong has schools I would send my own children to. ESF, Harrow, Kellett, the Chinese International School, German Swiss — by any measure this is one of the strongest school markets on earth, and the last thing it needs is a lecture from Nairobi about educational quality. So the honest question is the one I have asked in Uruguay, Cyprus and Bangladesh: what can we add to a market that already has everything? Here the answer is unusually specific.

Answer one: a place, in a market where places are the problem

Admission in Hong Kong is among the most competitive anywhere, and waiting lists are not an occasional inconvenience — they are the defining feature. A family relocating in October routinely finds every preferred school full, sometimes for a year or more, and the realistic alternatives are a school they did not choose or a child out of formal education while they wait. We have no waiting list. A child starts within a week of the assessment and runs a complete internationally examined programme in the meantime. A great many of our Hong Kong families use us exactly that way, and then either stay for a subject or two or move on with our blessing when a place comes free.

Answer two: the set that will not run

The same arithmetic that applies in every market applies here too, and being an excellent school does not exempt you from it. Four students who want Further Mathematics, three who want a third science, two who want Computer Science at A-Level — no head of department can justify a specialist and a room for that, and none is being unreasonable in saying so. In a live group drawn from Hong Kong, Amman, Nairobi and the Gulf, four becomes a full class.

Answer three: fees, said without dressing it up

Hong Kong international school fees are among the highest in the world, and at some schools debentures and capital levies sit on top of them. For a family on a full expatriate package that works. For a locally hired professional household, or a family with three children, or anyone whose package did not include education, it frequently does not. Live small-group teaching toward the same examinations at USD 2,160-6,480 a year is a different proposition, and I would not pretend it is the same product as a campus — only that it is the same qualification at a price that changes who can reach it.

The clock, which cooperates

Hong Kong runs UTC+8 with no seasonal changes against our UTC+3, so it is five hours ahead of us. A seven o’clock evening class in Hong Kong is two in the afternoon for our teachers and eight o’clock is three — ordinary teaching hours, every week of the year. Evening is the natural configuration here, which suits a school day that already runs long and a city where most families are doing something else until six.

And what I will not claim

That we are better than Harrow or ESF — we are not, and in-person school culture and a local peer group are things live delivery cannot replicate. That Cambridge is unfamiliar in Hong Kong — it is not. And that mainland China is a market we serve on the same terms — it is not, and our mainland pages explain why at length rather than in a footnote. Narrow and honest is the only version worth having in a market this well served.

Conclusion

A city with outstanding schools and not enough seats in them — which is a distribution problem, and the one live delivery answers best. Book an assessment for your child, or start with our Hong Kong and Macau pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

We have relocated and every school is full — what can we do?+

Start with us within a week of the assessment and run a complete internationally examined programme while a place comes free. It is the most common reason Hong Kong families contact us.

Our school is excellent — what would we gain?+

Usually a subject set your timetable cannot staff for four pupils. If your school covers what your child needs, we will tell you so.

How do fees compare?+

Hong Kong international fees are among the highest in the world with debentures at some schools. Smartious runs USD 2,160-6,480 a year for live small-group teaching toward the same examinations.

What time are classes?+

Evening. Hong Kong is five hours ahead of our teaching base, so a seven o’clock class is two in the afternoon for our teachers.

Ready to put this into practice?

Book an assessment with our admissions team. We'll review your child's profile and build a personalised learning plan.
