Online School in Indonesia: Three Time Zones, and an Economy Far Beyond Jakarta

By Alfred Ouko, Founder · October 2026 · 9 min read

Indonesia stretches across three time zones and thousands of inhabited islands, and its international schooling is concentrated in a handful of places. Jakarta has the largest tier by far, with Bali, Surabaya, Bandung and Batam following. The international economy is much wider than that. It runs through the coal and energy towns of Kalimantan, the nickel smelters of Sulawesi, the mines of Papua, the shipyards facing Singapore and the resorts of Bali and Lombok. This guide is about the families that economy brings in or creates, Indonesian and expatriate, what they do for school now, and where a live online school honestly fits. Our separate guide on homeschooling law covers sekolahrumah and the Paket exams in detail.

Where the international economy actually is

Jakarta holds the corporate headquarters, the embassies and the energy companies, including the state energy company Pertamina, and the schools follow: Jakarta Intercultural School, British School Jakarta, ACG and Sinarmas World Academy among many others. Surabaya is the port and industrial centre of East Java. Bandung has ITB and a technology and creative sector. Batam, forty-five minutes by ferry from Singapore, builds ships and electronics. Bali has a large expatriate, hospitality and remote-work community. Beyond those, Balikpapan anchors East Kalimantan’s oil, gas and coal economy, with the new capital, Nusantara, being built nearby; Central Sulawesi processes nickel; Papua has some of the largest mines in the world. Each of these places employs engineers and managers on international contracts.

What families currently do

In the big cities, families who want an international curriculum choose SPK schools, Indonesia’s licensed international schools, where Indonesian students also study Indonesian language, religion and civics. Most Indonesian children attend national schools, state or private, and many do well there. A growing number of families homeschool under the sekolahrumah framework, often with a local provider or a PKBM, though most of those work in Indonesian and toward the national curriculum. Some families use UK online schools, whose lessons often fall on London time, late in the Indonesian evening. The gap is specific: English-medium Cambridge or Pearson subject teaching, live and in the Indonesian day, for families outside the main cities and for students whose school cannot staff the subjects they need.

Three time zones, one timetable

Indonesia has three time zones and none of them observes daylight saving. WIB (UTC+7) covers Sumatra, Java and West and Central Kalimantan, and is four hours ahead of our Nairobi teaching base. WITA (UTC+8) covers Bali, Nusa Tenggara, the rest of Kalimantan and Sulawesi, five hours ahead. WIT (UTC+9) covers Maluku and Papua, six hours ahead. Our live classes run in the Indonesian afternoon, from about 1 PM WIB, which is 9 AM in Nairobi. The same class begins at 2 PM in Bali, Balikpapan or Makassar and at 3 PM in Jayapura. That suits students who finish a school day first, and students in the east can watch the recording if a live slot clashes. Every lesson is recorded.

Where a live online school fits

In three ways. Alongside a school: a student at a national school or an SPK school takes one or more Cambridge subjects with us that their timetable cannot offer, such as A-Level Further Mathematics or a third science. As the academic programme of a homeschool: single-family and multi-family homeschools register with the district or city education office (Dinas Pendidikan), and our timetable, marked work and weekly reports give the family the record it needs. And for expatriate families on contracts in Balikpapan or Batam, as a full programme that continues unchanged at the next posting. Smartious is not an SPK school or a PKBM, and we do not register families with a Dinas. Expatriate families should also check their home country’s rules and their KITAS conditions.

Subjects, and the honest limits

Families in the energy, mining and shipbuilding towns tend to ask for Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, the subjects behind engineering degrees. Jakarta’s corporate families add Economics and Business. Families aiming at US universities take the American curriculum with AP; those aiming at Canada can take the Ontario Secondary School Diploma through our Ontario partner school. Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel examinations are sat at authorised centres, including the British Council in Jakarta, which families book. The limits are real. We cannot give a child a campus, school sport or daily friendships, and we do not teach the national curriculum’s Indonesian language, Pancasila and civics, or religion. A student settled at a good SPK school or national school, heading for an Indonesian university, may well not need us.

Indonesia’s international economy reaches from Batam to Papua, and its international schools reach a few cities. A live Cambridge, Pearson, IB or American programme taught in the Indonesian afternoon, from USD 423/month for Primary and varying by curriculum and level, reaches every island the same way, alongside a school or as the core of a homeschool. If that fits your family, book an assessment for your child.

Frequently asked questions

What time are classes in Indonesia?

From about 1 PM WIB in Jakarta, 2 PM in Bali, Kalimantan’s east and Sulawesi, and 3 PM in Papua. Jakarta is four hours ahead of our Nairobi teaching base, and every lesson is recorded.

Can my child study with you alongside an SPK or national school?

Yes. The school keeps the enrolment and the Indonesian subjects, and your child takes selected Cambridge or Pearson subjects with us in the afternoon.

Is Smartious an SPK school or a PKBM?

No. We are an online school based in Nairobi. Families use us alongside a school or as the programme of a registered homeschool; for the Indonesian ijazah, students sit the Paket exams through a PKBM.

Can a Cambridge student enter an Indonesian university?

Yes, but an Indonesian citizen using a foreign diploma needs ijazah equivalence (penyetaraan) from the Ministry. Check the current procedure early.
