Online School in Italy: Turin’s Engineers, the Motor Valley and Rome’s UN Agencies
By Alfred Ouko, Founder · October 2026 · 9 min read
Italy’s international schools are concentrated in Milan and Rome, and they serve those cities well. The families who need English-medium schooling are spread much wider. Turin builds cars and spacecraft, the Motor Valley around Bologna and Modena builds Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Ducatis, Florence hosts more American study-abroad programmes than anywhere else in Italy, and Naples is home to a NATO command. Italian law is also friendlier than most: home education is legal by annual declaration. This guide is about where a live online school fits for these families, usually alongside a school, sometimes as the main one.
Where the international families are
Milan is the financial and design capital and the largest international-school market. Rome holds two diplomatic corps, one accredited to Italy and one to the Holy See, and the UN’s Rome-based agencies: FAO, the World Food Programme and IFAD. Turin is the historic home of FIAT, now part of Stellantis, with Iveco, Thales Alenia Space and the Politecnico di Torino drawing engineers from abroad. Emilia-Romagna’s Motor Valley spreads Ferrari at Maranello, Lamborghini at Sant’Agata Bolognese and Ducati in Bologna across small towns rather than one city. Florence adds academics, conservators and long-settled English-speaking families. Naples hosts NATO’s Allied Joint Force Command, with families who rotate every few years and need a record that moves with them.
The honest gap
Outside Milan and Rome, provision thins quickly. A family posted to Maranello or a town outside Turin may find one international school within reach, with limited places in the upper years, or none at all. Italian schools are a good option for younger children, who often become fluent quickly, but a teenager arriving at fourteen faces a demanding curriculum in a new language and a record that may not travel to the next posting. Dedicated online options for Italy are also thin at upper-secondary level, so families with older teenagers can find themselves choosing between a long commute, a relocation, or a gap in their child’s English-medium record. That gap, rather than the quality of Italian schools, is what we address.
Where a live online school fits
Most families use us alongside a school. A child stays enrolled in an Italian or international school, and two to four Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel subjects run live in small groups after school, toward IGCSE and then A-Level. Italy is two hours behind Nairobi in winter and one hour behind in summer, and many Italian secondary schools finish in the early afternoon, which leaves a comfortable window. Some families choose istruzione parentale, which is legal by annual declaration to the local school head, and use us as their main school. Until the education obligation ends at sixteen, that route carries an annual exam at an Italian school, so it needs planning; our guide to the age-16 rule covers it in full.
Subjects, city by city
Turin’s engineering and aerospace families ask for Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics at A-Level, often with UK or other English-speaking universities in mind. The Motor Valley’s families want the same sciences, frequently for children who may follow a parent into engineering. Rome’s UN and diplomatic families care most about continuity, with English, History and Economics taught in a way that survives a posting to New York, Geneva or Nairobi. Naples families on NATO rotations often want American curriculum with AP, so that a return to a US school or university is smooth. Florence’s families tend to ask for English Literature beside a solid academic core. These are subjects a small local school cannot staff at A-Level for two or three students, and all of them run live, every lesson recorded.
And when the local option is right
A child settled in a good Italian school, fluent in Italian and heading for the Maturità and an Italian university, is well served without us. Italian universities read the Maturità natively, and the system is demanding in the best sense. A family with a place at one of the established international schools in Milan or Rome may also have what they need. Our value in Italy is specific: an English-medium examined record where no campus offers one, subjects a small school cannot staff, continuity for families who rotate, and a documented curriculum for families who choose istruzione parentale. Where none of that applies, I would rather tell a family to stay where they are.
Italy’s international families live in Turin, the Motor Valley, Florence and Naples as well as Milan and Rome, and its law gives them more room than most of Europe. A live online school on a close clock, used alongside a school or as the main one under istruzione parentale, brings the same English-medium record to all of them. Book an assessment and we will suggest the arrangement that suits your child’s age and city.
Frequently asked questions
Is home education legal in Italy?
Yes. Istruzione parentale works by annual declaration to the head of your local school, not by permission. Until sixteen, children sit an annual exam at an Italian school to progress, so the year needs planning.
Can we use you alongside an Italian school instead?
Yes, and most families do. The school carries the enrolment, and Cambridge or Edexcel subjects run live with us after the school day.
When are classes?
Italy is two hours behind Nairobi in winter and one hour behind in summer, so live classes fit the Italian afternoon comfortably. Every session is recorded.
Where are Cambridge examinations sat in Italy?
At authorised exam centres, which families book; in Italy these are usually Cambridge-authorised schools that accept external candidates, confirmed per family, per session.
