Most families come to us with a question about teaching. Lebanese families more often come with a question about geography — not where they are, but where their children might apply from in five years, which is a genuinely open question in a way it is not in most markets. Lebanon has one of the largest and most professionally established diasporas anywhere, and that changes what the right answer looks like.
The problem, stated plainly
A national or French school record is assessed by foreign universities through recognition procedures, and those procedures differ in every country. What a French university asks for is not what a Gulf, Brazilian, Canadian or Australian one asks for. Each conversion takes time and produces a different result, and none can be done in advance because you have to know the destination first. For a family with relatives established in several of those countries — which describes a great many Lebanese households — that is a real planning problem rather than a theoretical one.
The answer, and why it is simple
A qualification read directly in all of them. UCAS reads Cambridge A-Levels natively. American and Canadian universities read A-Levels, the IB Diploma and AP records without conversion. French institutions assess them through equivalence routes they use every year. Gulf universities — many of them branch campuses of British and American institutions — read them equally directly. A-Levels are accepted in 160+ countries. One record, prepared once, that does not need reconstructing depending on where a child ends up.
And the case for families who are not going anywhere
This one gets missed. The American University of Beirut and the Lebanese American University teach in English and read Cambridge, IB and AP records directly. A student arriving at either with only a language test score has demonstrated they can pass a language test. A student arriving with Cambridge IGCSEs and A-Levels has demonstrated they can study Chemistry, Mathematics and Literature in English to an external examiner’s standard, across years, under exam conditions. Those are different claims, and admissions offices know it.
What I will not claim
That Lebanese schooling needs improving — it is among the strongest in the region and does not need my opinion. That we teach the Lebanese Baccalaureate — we do not, and we are not MEHE-licensed. And that I know Lebanon’s home-education position — we could not verify it and say so rather than guessing. Our offer is narrow: subjects taught live by specialists toward externally examined qualifications, alongside the school a family already has.
Where the school map thins
Beirut and Mount Lebanon hold most of the international provision. The Bekaa is a substantial agricultural economy with almost none, an hour over the mountain. Tripoli is the second city with thin provision for its population. Saida and the south have limited options and some of the deepest diaspora links in the country. In those regions we are not competing with a campus so much as reaching where campuses are not.
And the practicalities
We quote and invoice in USD, which is widely used here for larger commitments, so a multi-year education decision is one figure. And Lebanon runs UTC+2 in winter and UTC+3 in summer against our UTC+3 year-round — one hour apart in winter and exactly level in summer, so effectively our whole teaching day is available. After-school for a Beirut professional household, evening for a family in the valley, mid-morning for anyone whose schedule allows it.
