Online School in the USA: Live K-12 Teaching, and AP for Students Whose School Has None

By Alfred Ouko, Founder · October 2026 · 9 min read

American families have more online schooling choices than anyone, and most of them are self-paced: video lessons, automated quizzes, and a parent checking progress at the kitchen table. That suits some children well. This guide is for the families who have tried it, or looked at it, and want something different: a live teacher, a small class, a timetable, and work marked by a person who knows the student. Smartious teaches the American curriculum from Kindergarten to Grade 12, with Advanced Placement (AP), live in US time zones. Cambridge IGCSE, A Level and IB are available as options. Below is who it suits, how it fits your state’s rules, and when your local school is the better answer.

Who uses a live online school in the US

Four groups, mostly. Homeschooling families who want the structure of real teaching without giving up the flexibility of learning at home. High-school students whose school offers few AP courses, which is common in rural districts and small towns. Families who move between states for work, including military and corporate families, and want one transcript that does not restart with each district. And students whose days are already full: serious athletes, young performers, students managing a health condition. For a family planning a posting overseas, the same classes continue from abroad, and the teachers and course codes do not change. What none of these families want is a school replacing parents with a screen. They want a teacher.

The K-12 American curriculum, taught live

In elementary school the focus is reading, writing and mathematics, with science and social studies alongside, in small live groups with a teacher who knows each child. Middle school builds towards high school: pre-algebra and algebra, life and physical science, and extended writing. High school runs on credits across Grades 9 to 12, with a transcript that lists each course, grade and credit, and with AP courses for students ready for college-level work. Lessons are recorded, so a missed class is never lost. Families who expect a move abroad, or who want UK and international universities in view, can take Cambridge IGCSE and A Level or IB subjects in the same school. Our existing guide to the K-12 model explains credits, transcripts and diplomas step by step.

The AP gap, and how live courses fill it

AP access depends heavily on where a student goes to school. A large suburban high school may offer AP Calculus BC, AP Physics C, AP Chemistry and AP Computer Science A every year. A small rural school may offer two or three AP courses, or none, because it cannot staff a class for a handful of students. Colleges read the transcript in the context of what the school offered, but a student who wants the course still needs somewhere to take it. A live AP course, taught by a subject specialist in a small group, fills that gap. The student sits the AP exam in May at a school or centre that administers it, which the family arranges with our guidance, and the result travels with the transcript to every college application.

How it fits your state’s homeschool law

Homeschooling is legal in every state, and each state sets its own rules. Texas treats home schools as private schools, with no registration or testing. California families commonly file a Private School Affidavit each October. Pennsylvania is among the most demanding, with a notarised affidavit, a portfolio and an annual evaluator. Families learning with us full-time follow their own state’s law, and we provide the course records and progress reports that make that straightforward. Smartious does not replace a state umbrella school or programme where one is required, and we say so before a family enrols. A student attending a local public or private school can take our courses alongside it. Ask the school in advance whether an outside AP or credit will appear on its transcript.

Class times, and when to stay local

Our classes run in US daytime hours. Measured from our Nairobi teaching base, the Eastern time zone is seven hours behind in summer and eight in winter, Pacific is ten or eleven hours behind, and Hawaii thirteen. Families from Maine to California join live without anyone teaching or learning at midnight, and every lesson is recorded. The honest limit is as important as the offer. A child who is thriving in a strong local school, with the AP courses they need, a sports team and friends down the street, should usually stay. Our place is with the families that school cannot serve as well: those who want live teaching at home, students missing courses, and families on the move.

The United States has excellent schools and a great deal of self-paced online learning. What many families cannot find is the middle ground: a live teacher, a small class and a real AP course, wherever they live and however often they move. That is the school we run, in US time zones, from Kindergarten to Grade 12. Book an assessment and we will place your child at the right level.
