Bangladesh’s English-medium school sector is large, long-established and heavily concentrated in Dhaka. Four other regions carry substantial economies and populations with far less of it, and each needs something slightly different: Chattogram runs the ports and industry, Sylhet carries the country’s deepest British ties, Khulna anchors the aquaculture delta, and Rajshahi is the northern university and medical city.
Chattogram, and the distance problem
The principal port and second city moves most of Bangladesh’s trade and hosts the export processing zones, shipping and shipbreaking industries and a long mercantile community. Its English-medium list is a fraction of Dhaka’s three hundred kilometres north, and for sixth form the traditional answer has been to send a child to the capital. The subject demand is straightforward: Economics, Business, Accounting and Mathematics at A-Level for the trading families, Physics and Chemistry with Mathematics for the engineering-bound.
Sylhet, and the British connection
The British Bangladeshi community is overwhelmingly of Sylheti origin, and family ties across generations run through almost every household here. That makes one thing worth more in Sylhet than in most cities anywhere: a qualification UCAS reads natively, with no conversion and no equivalence assessment. Alongside that sit the tea gardens, the remittance-supported education spending and a school list that is growing but still short for the demand. One distinction we make carefully on these pages: education law follows residence, so a child in Sylhet follows the Bangladeshi framework whatever their relatives’ status — but the qualification travels regardless.
Khulna and the delta
The south-west anchors Mongla port, the shrimp aquaculture and jute processing industries that export worldwide, and the Sundarbans with the research and conservation work around it. English-medium provision is very limited and Dhaka is a long way north-east. The subject fit is unusually good here: the delta, the mangroves and the aquaculture industry make Cambridge Biology and Geography and AP Environmental Science genuinely well grounded rather than abstract.
Rajshahi and the north
The northern university city carries a strong academic and medical tradition alongside silk weaving and the mango and agricultural belt. Ambition here runs high — the region produces doctors, engineers and academics in numbers — and the English-medium list is thin across a wide area. Biology and Chemistry with Mathematics is the most requested set we receive from the north, which is exactly what a city with this many medical institutions would produce.
What the four share, and how to plan it
A shortage of specialists rather than of ambition, and a traditional answer — relocate to Dhaka — that costs a family a second household. Two to four Cambridge subjects alongside a Bangladeshi school enrolment is realistic, concentrated on mathematics, the sciences and English at O-Level or IGCSE, then two or three A-Levels chosen strictly for the target course. And the timing helps: at three hours ahead, a four o’clock class in any of these cities is one in the afternoon for our teachers, so after-school works identically in Khulna and Dhaka.
