Erbil holds the deepest international school provision in Iraq, and three of the country’s most distinctive communities are somewhere else. Basra runs one of the world’s significant oil provinces with an internationally recruited technical workforce. Sulaymaniyah is an academic city with English-medium higher education and thinner school provision. Duhok governorate spreads agriculture and trade across mountains and valleys with almost nothing. Basra, and a profession that moves
The south holds the major fields that make Iraq one of the world’s significant producers, the ports at Umm Qasr and along the Shatt al-Arab, and petrochemicals and heavy industry. The technical workforce is recruited internationally and moves between operations and countries — the same profile we already teach in Stavanger, Baku, Hassi Messaoud, Macáe, Neuquén, Cabinda and Takoradi. The subject spine is unambiguous: Cambridge A-Level Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, with Geography as a fourth for geoscience routes. What these families most need beyond the teaching is portability, because a child who changes school system with each posting pays in alignment and sometimes a repeated year.
Sulaymaniyah, and a city already studying in English
The Kurdistan Region’s cultural and academic centre is home to the American University of Iraq Sulaimani, an English-medium institution with a strong regional reputation, alongside a long university and publishing tradition. School-level international provision is thinner than in Erbil, three hours west. The argument here is the one we make across Iraq but sharpest in this city: a student heading for English-medium higher education benefits from an English-medium externally examined record before they get there, not only a language test score at the point of application.
Duhok and the northern districts
The northern governorate carries agriculture, the trade corridor running toward Türkiye and its own university, with communities spread across mountains and valleys over a wide area and almost no international provision. Erbil is a couple of hours south-east. For families in Zakho, Amedi or the mountain districts, the constraint is simply distance — and live delivery closes it without a move, with Biology and Chemistry alongside Geography serving the agronomy and environmental routes these households most often have in view.
What the three share
Distance from provision, and in Basra’s case a household that may move again. That is the shape live delivery answers directly: identical teaching wherever the family is, subject sets assembled from a group drawn across countries, and one examination board that continues to the next posting. Every class is also recorded, so a session that cannot be attended is never a session lost — which matters more in some households than others and costs nothing to provide.
Planning it, including the two authorities
Two to four Cambridge subjects alongside an Iraqi school enrolment is realistic, concentrated on mathematics, the sciences and English at IGCSE, then two or three A-Levels chosen strictly for the target course, with Arabic or Kurdish home language support kept alongside. And confirm your position with the right ministry: the Kurdistan Region has its own Ministry of Education for Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Duhok and Halabja, while the federal Ministry of Education administers Basra and the federal governorates.
