Jordan’s international school tier is one of the deepest in the Levant and it is almost entirely in Amman. Four other parts of the country carry substantial economies and populations with very little of it: Aqaba runs the only port, Irbid is the university city, Zarqa carries the industrial belt, and the Jordan Valley holds minerals and agriculture. Each needs something slightly different, and this article is about all four.
Aqaba, and the distance problem
The Red Sea city is Jordan’s sole port, a special economic zone with its own investment and logistics regime, and a diving and tourism economy that draws operators and visitors from across Europe and the Gulf. It is a genuinely international working community and Amman is four hours north — a relocation decision rather than a commute. The subject fit is good: Economics, Business and Mathematics for the port and zone economy, and Biology and Geography with real local context in the Red Sea reef and the Rum desert.
Irbid, and the ambition problem
Irbid is the university city — Yarmouk and the Jordan University of Science and Technology give the north a medical and engineering academic culture few regional cities match, alongside one of the youngest populations in the country. The constraint here is not distance, since Amman is ninety minutes away, but that academic ambition runs well ahead of local international provision. Cambridge A-Level Biology and Chemistry with Mathematics is the most requested set we get from this city, and it exists precisely because a medical faculty in the family’s own town makes that ambition ordinary rather than exceptional.
Zarqa, and the price problem
Zarqa carries the refinery, chemicals, manufacturing and free zones, and is one of Jordan’s largest population centres — thirty minutes from Amman and effectively without international provision. Here the constraint is neither distance nor ambition but cost: Amman’s international fees are set at the top of the regional market for a different clientele. Live small-group teaching toward the same Cambridge examinations at a fraction of that is the whole argument, and Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics is the natural spine for a refinery and chemicals belt.
The Jordan Valley, and the dispersal problem
The valley holds potash, bromine and mineral processing at industrial scale, intensive irrigated agriculture in one of the most distinctive growing environments on earth, and a resort and wellness sector along the shore. Families are spread down a long valley rather than clustered near any town with a school tier, and Amman is an hour or more up the escarpment. Chemistry with Mathematics serves the minerals sector; Biology and Geography with AP Environmental Science serve the agricultural and water-research households, and both have unusually serious local context.
What the four share, and how to plan it
Every one of them sits on the same clock we teach from — zero offset, year-round — which means the timetable is built around the family rather than around a window. Two to four Cambridge subjects alongside a Jordanian school enrolment is realistic, concentrated where the overlap is heaviest in mathematics and the sciences, then two or three A-Levels chosen strictly for the target course, with Cambridge Arabic kept rather than dropped. And confirm the legal position with the Ministry of Education if your plan depends on it, because we could not verify Jordan’s home-education position and say so rather than guessing.
