Myanmar’s international school provision is concentrated in Yangon, and three of the country’s most substantial regional economies are somewhere else entirely. Mandalay is the second city and a centre of trade and crafts. The Shan highlands produce tea, coffee and horticulture at altitude. Mawlamyine anchors a southern port and rubber region. This article is about all three, and about the subject spines each of them actually wants.
Mandalay, and the distance problem
The second city sits at the centre of the country’s trade routes and its historic cultural life — crafts, gemstones, textiles and the agriculture of the central dry zone, alongside a long university tradition. It is a substantial commercial and academic population, and international provision here is a fraction of Yangon’s six hundred kilometres south. The demand is straightforward: Economics, Business, Accounting and Mathematics at A-Level for the trading families, and the sciences for the university-connected ones. Cambridge Chinese alongside the English-medium core suits the city’s long trading connections.
The Shan highlands, and no provision at all
Taunggyi anchors a distinct regional economy — tea, coffee, horticulture and market gardening in a cooler climate than the plains, with Inle Lake and its communities nearby. It is genuinely productive and there is no international schooling in the highlands whatsoever; Mandalay is a long journey north-west and Yangon further still. Biology and Chemistry with Geography feed agronomy, food science and horticulture directly — the disciplines this region’s own economy runs on — and the local context makes them unusually well grounded.
Mawlamyine and the south
The southern coastal city sits at the mouth of the Thanlwin river with a long trading and maritime tradition, at the centre of a regional economy built on rubber, agriculture and fisheries through Mon State and the coast beyond. Yangon is around three hundred kilometres north-west and there is no international provision locally. Here the split is between Biology and Geography for the agricultural and coastal households and Economics and Business for the trading ones, and a single live group covers a student in Hpa-an or Thaton as readily as one in the city.
What the three share
Distance from provision rather than any shortage of ambition — and, unusually for our coverage, a timezone that helps rather than hinders. Myanmar is three and a half hours ahead of our teaching base, so a child in Taunggyi or Mawlamyine finishes school, takes a break, and joins a live class in the late afternoon while it is early afternoon for us. Every session is also recorded, so a class that cannot be attended is never a class lost.
Planning it
Two to four Cambridge subjects alongside a Myanmar school enrolment is realistic, concentrated on mathematics, the sciences and English at IGCSE, then two or three A-Levels chosen strictly for the target course. Plan the examination question at enrolment rather than late — the country is large and journeys are long, so Yangon is checked first, Mandalay serves the central region, and arrangements for Naypyidaw, Taunggyi and the south are made several weeks ahead of each window. And confirm your legal position with the Ministry of Education if your plan depends on it, since we could not verify Myanmar’s home-education position and say so rather than guessing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there international schooling in the Shan highlands?+

Our child wants agronomy or food science — what should they take?+
Cambridge A-Level Biology and Chemistry with Geography or Mathematics, planned backward from the target university from IGCSE onward.
How many subjects alongside a Myanmar school week?+
Two to four is realistic, then two or three A-Levels chosen strictly for the target course.
Where would our child sit examinations?+
Planned at enrolment. Yangon holds the deepest capacity, Mandalay serves the central region, and the highlands and south are planned several weeks ahead of each window.
