Virtual School in Qatar: Al Khor, Dukhan, Mesaieed and the Road to Education City

By Brendaliz Chelangat, Head of Academics · October 2026 · 9 min read

Qatar is small enough that almost everything feels close to Doha, until you live in Al Khor and drive in for school. Most of the country’s international schools are in Doha and its western suburbs. The energy economy that pays for much of the country is not: it sits at Ras Laffan in the north, at Dukhan on the west coast and at Mesaieed in the south. This guide is for the families who live near that work, and for any student in the last two school years who is weighing Education City, Qatar University or a university abroad.

Al Khor and Ras Laffan

Al Khor is around fifty kilometres north of Doha and home to many families linked to QatarEnergy LNG and the Ras Laffan industrial area. Al Khor International School is the main local option, and families either use it, drive to Doha daily, or move into the city. For many children the local school is the right base. The gaps tend to appear at upper secondary: a subject the school cannot timetable, or an A Level set too small to run. Families on rotation also want the same curriculum and exam board to continue to the next posting, which is often another LNG site somewhere else in the world. Two or three subjects taken live with us, alongside the local school, solves both without changing anything else.

Dukhan, Mesaieed and shift work

Dukhan, on the west coast, grew around the oil field; Mesaieed, in the south, around its port and petrochemical plants. Both are a long drive from the Doha schools. Al Wakrah, between Mesaieed and the airport, is home to many aviation families whose working hours never follow a school timetable. In each case what helps is a timetable that does not depend on the commute and lessons that are recorded. Qatar is on UTC+3, the same as Nairobi, so a 15:30 class in Dukhan is 15:30 for our teachers, Sunday to Thursday, and a student who misses one because of a family trip or a late shift watches the recording the same evening.

Qatari families: the school stays, the subjects add

Qatari families who want an international qualification use it alongside the Ministry of Education and Higher Education’s national pathway, not instead of it. The school keeps Arabic, Islamic studies and the national record. We add English, Mathematics and the sciences at IGCSE, then AS and A Level, for students aiming at English-taught programmes. This is especially useful outside Doha, where a specialist teacher in Further Mathematics, Physics or Computer Science may simply not be nearby. Classes are small, live and taught by qualified teachers, and every lesson is recorded. Families in Al Khor or Dukhan often find this matters most at A Level, when a chosen engineering or medical programme needs a subject the nearest school does not offer. One live group closes that gap without a change of school.

The final two years, and Education City

Qatar has something few countries of its size can offer: Education City. Qatar Foundation hosts branch campuses including Georgetown University in Qatar, Northwestern University in Qatar, Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, Texas A&M University at Qatar and Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar, alongside Hamad Bin Khalifa University. Qatar University is the national university. A student finishing A Levels or AP can apply to these and to UCAS or the Common Application in the same season, on the same record. Each university sets its own admission requirements, and results may also need equivalency through the Ministry, so check both before subjects are chosen. Private candidates sit Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel exams through British Council Doha; centres are confirmed per family, per session.

The rules, and when the local school is right

Qatar does not have a formal homeschool registration framework comparable to the UK or the USA. The Ministry of Education and Higher Education regulates physical schools, and its mandate does not formally cover online delivery for non-Qatari expatriate families, who in practice study under home-country curriculum documentation, which we provide. Smartious claims no approval from the Ministry. Confirm your own position before relying on online study full-time, and ask any school your child may join later what it would need. The local school is often the right answer: if your child is settled in Al Khor or Al Wakrah, and the subjects they need are taught, keep it. We fit best where a subject or a set is missing.

In Qatar the distances are short and the gaps are specific: a subject in Al Khor, a timetable in Al Wakrah, an A Level set in Dukhan. A live subject teacher on the same clock fills them alongside the local school, and the final two years open a choice most countries cannot match, with Education City at home and universities abroad on the same record. Book an assessment, and we will start with your child’s school and their target.

Frequently asked questions

What time are live classes in Qatar?

Qatar is on Arabia Standard Time (UTC+3), the same as Nairobi, so a 9:00 lesson is 9:00 in Doha, Al Khor and Dukhan. Classes run Sunday to Thursday and every lesson is recorded.

Can my child keep their school in Al Khor and add subjects?

Yes. That is the arrangement we recommend for most families outside Doha: the school stays the base, and two or three subjects run with us alongside it.

Do Education City universities accept A Levels?

They admit international applicants on qualifications such as A Levels, the IB and AP, but each sets its own requirements. Check each programme, and whether Ministry equivalency is needed.

Where would exams be sat?

Private-candidate entries go through British Council Doha. Entry deadlines fall months before each series, and centres are confirmed per family, per session.
