Virtual School in Rwanda: Huye, Musanze, Rubavu, and Choosing a Combination at Senior Four
By Brendaliz Chelangat, Head of Academics · October 2026 · 8 min read
Rwanda is small, well connected and easy to cross in a day, which makes it tempting to assume that everything in Kigali is available everywhere. For international schooling it is not. Green Hills Academy, the International School of Kigali and Riviera High School are all in the capital, and a family in Huye, Musanze or Rubavu either commutes, boards or does without. This guide is for those families, and it concentrates on the moment in Rwandan secondary school when the choices narrow fastest: the end of Senior Three and the choice of a subject combination for Senior Four to Six.
The towns, and who lives there
Huye is Rwanda’s historic university town, home to a major University of Rwanda campus, with academic families who often want sciences and Mathematics taught to a high level. Musanze is the gateway to Volcanoes National Park, with lodge operators, guides and conservation organisations working with the mountain gorillas. Rubavu sits on Lake Kivu beside the border with Goma, with tourism, cross-border trade and humanitarian staff. Each has good Rwandan schools and strong connectivity. None has the international schools found in Kigali, and Kigali is a few hours away by road. For a lecturer’s family in Huye or a conservation family in Musanze, that usually means boarding in Kigali from secondary school, or a parent who commutes. Neither is wrong, but both have a cost.
Senior Three, and the combination choice
Rwandan students sit national examinations at the end of Senior Three, then move into a three-year combination such as MPC, MCB, PCB or HEG for Senior Four to Six, ending in the national A Level examinations. The choice of combination closes doors quickly, so it is the right time to think about the international route as well. A student can take Cambridge IGCSE subjects beside S2 and S3, then two or three Cambridge A Levels beside the Rwandan combination, or choose one route. For many families in Huye and Musanze the aim is simply to keep both options open until the university plan is clear. Two or three A Levels chosen strictly for the target course usually work better than more.
The legal route, and why alongside is the default
Rwanda does not have a formal homeschool registration framework. The Ministry of Education regulates physical schools, and the Rwanda Education Board oversees the curriculum. That means the simplest and safest arrangement for most families is a school enrolment carrying the formal record, with Smartious teaching international subjects live alongside it. A family planning full-time online study instead of a school should confirm its position with the ministry first. Rwanda’s move to English as the language of instruction in 2008 helps here: an English-medium international track runs in the same direction as the national system. We provide timetables, schemes of work and termly reports, so the family has a clear record of what was taught.
The clock, and the exam trip
Rwanda runs on Central Africa Time, one hour behind our Nairobi teaching base, with no daylight saving on either side. A 4pm class in Musanze is 5pm for our teacher, so after-school lessons fit easily and the gap never changes during the year. Every lesson is recorded. Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel examinations are sat at authorised exam centres, which families book; in Rwanda they are in Kigali. Centres are confirmed per family, per session, and for students in Huye, Musanze or Rubavu that is a day trip or an overnight stay, twice a year. Because the offset is fixed, the timetable set in January still works in July. Families book the exam trip at enrolment, not in the final term.
University routes from the provinces
Rwanda is unusual in having international universities at home. African Leadership University and Carnegie Mellon University Africa are in Kigali, the University of Global Health Equity is in the north, and the University of Rwanda has campuses across the country; entry requirements for foreign qualifications should be confirmed per programme. Abroad, UCAS reads Cambridge A Levels natively, the Common Application serves US plans, and universities in Kenya, South Africa, Belgium and Canada are familiar destinations for Rwandan students. A record that combines the Rwandan combination with Cambridge results keeps all of these open. For students in the provinces, that range of options from one record is the main reason to start early.
Rwanda’s provincial towns are well connected but a few hours from the capital’s international schools, and the Senior Four combination choice comes early. A live class one hour behind Nairobi, alongside the local school, keeps the international route open without boarding or a move to Kigali. Book an assessment and tell us your town and your child’s year, and we will plan around the combination choice.
Frequently asked questions
What time are lessons in Rwanda?
Rwanda is one hour behind Nairobi all year, so a 4pm class in Rwanda is 5pm for our teacher. Lessons fit the afternoon after school, and every lesson is recorded.
Can my child stay in a Rwandan school and study with you?
Yes, and it is the arrangement we recommend. The school carries the enrolment and the national combination, and we teach Cambridge subjects live alongside.
Where would a student from Musanze or Rubavu sit examinations?
At authorised exam centres in Kigali, which families book. Centres are confirmed per family, per session, so plan the trip for each series.
How much does it cost?
From USD 423/month for Primary, payable termly. Fees vary by curriculum and level and are confirmed after the assessment.
