Venezuela’s international schooling has always been a Caracas story, and four of the country’s deepest technical and academic communities are somewhere else. Zulia has taught petroleum engineering since the 1920s. Guayana built a metallurgical industry on the Orinoco. Carabobo carries the manufacturing belt. And Mérida is one of Latin America’s notable university cities. This article is about those four, and about the subject spines each of them actually wants.
Zulia, and a century of petroleum
Lake Maracaibo has been the centre of Venezuelan oil since the 1920s, and the region built one of the most experienced petroleum engineering and geoscience communities in the Americas around it. That is a profession which has always been internationally mobile, and the subject spine is unambiguous: Cambridge A-Level Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, with Geography as a fourth for geoscience routes. Those are read by petroleum and earth-sciences programmes in the UK, the United States, Canada and Spain without conversion — which for a family in this profession is the practical form of portability.
Guayana, and metals on the Orinoco
Ciudad Guayana was built around the Guayana shield’s iron ore and bauxite — steel, aluminium, and the Guri hydroelectric project that powers them — producing a metallurgical and industrial engineering community with few equivalents in the region. Our Guayana students sit in the same live classes as families in Antofagasta, Potosí, Arequipa, Kolwezi and the Zambian Copperbelt, taking the same Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Geography spine. It is one of the most internationally consistent cohorts we teach, and it works because metallurgy is the same subject everywhere.
Carabobo and the manufacturing belt
Valencia and Puerto Cabello carry Venezuela’s industrial heartland — automotive, chemicals, food processing — alongside a strong regional university and medical sector. The demand splits neatly: Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry for the engineering families, Biology and Chemistry with Mathematics for the medicine-bound students a university city produces in numbers. Both are sets that need a subject specialist rather than a curriculum package.
Mérida, and an academic tradition
The Universidad de Los Andes has shaped Mérida for two centuries, giving the Venezuelan highlands an academic and research culture that few regional cities match. Families here take education seriously by default, and what they usually want is not motivation but access — a subject specialist for A-Level Chemistry, a group small enough that a student is actually taught rather than lectured, and a record that a competitive foreign university reads directly. There is no international schooling in the Andes at all, and Caracas is a long way north-east.
What the four share, and how to plan it
Technical or academic depth, distance from the capital, and families whose members are frequently in more than one country. Two to four Cambridge subjects alongside a Venezuelan school enrolment is realistic, concentrated where the overlap with the national programme is heaviest in mathematics and the sciences, then two or three A-Levels chosen strictly for the target course, with Cambridge Spanish kept rather than dropped. And plan the examination question early — in this market we raise it at enrolment, and where a domestic sitting is not practical for a series we look at alternatives including sittings arranged where relatives live abroad.
Frequently Asked Questions
Our family works in petroleum — what should our child take?+
Cambridge A-Level Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, with Geography as a fourth for geoscience routes. It is the spine petroleum and earth-sciences programmes read directly.
Is there international schooling outside Caracas?+
Limited in Zulia, Carabobo and Guayana, and none in the Andes. Live delivery reaches all four identically.
How many subjects alongside a Venezuelan school week?+
Two to four is realistic, concentrated on mathematics, the sciences and English at IGCSE, then two or three A-Levels chosen strictly for the target course.
What if we move country mid-programme?+
The curriculum, teachers, and examination board continue unchanged. Only the address changes, and examinations are sat at authorised centres wherever the family is.
