Homeschool laws & regulatory framework in the Greece
Greek law on school attendance is among the strictest in Europe, and honest pages say so before anything else — then map the two doors it leaves wide open. Here is the whole framework exactly.
The rule: attendance, ages four to fifteen
Under Law 1566/1985 (Art. 2 § 3), school attendance is compulsory for children resident in Greece — today spanning two compulsory kindergarten years from age four, dimotiko, and gymnasio, to about fifteen. Parental-choice homeschooling is not lawful for resident children, and enrolment in a foreign online or distance programme is not recognised as fulfilling the obligation. Greece belongs with Germany and the Netherlands at the strict end of the European spectrum, and no honest provider markets homeschooling to Greece-resident families for these years. We do not.
The narrow exception, stated factually
Greek law's single home-teaching provision (Art. 32 § 4) covers children whose health or special educational needs make school attendance especially difficult — kat' oikon didaskalia, administered by the state under the school's direct supervision and materials. It is a welfare measure inside the school system, not a homeschool right, and it is not a pathway we position or advise families toward. Families who believe it may apply to their child speak to their school and the education authorities, not to a marketing page.
Residency, not nationality — the distinction that decides everything
The Greek obligation attaches to residence in Greece, not to Greek nationality. Families who are not resident — who remain legally registered in another country while spending time in Greece — follow their country of residence's framework, whatever it is. Where that line sits for a given family is a legal question about their own circumstances, decided with their own advisers; we state the distinction precisely, plan the education around whichever side of it the family is on, and never blur it in either direction.
Door one: supplementary — the configuration Greece already invented
Nothing in Greek law restricts structured education beside the school enrolment — and no country on earth normalised it more thoroughly: the frontistirio tradition means Greek families already treat paid afternoon tuition as a standard part of schooling, budgeted in thousands of euros a year and aimed at the Panhellenic examinations.
