Homeschool laws & regulatory framework in the Poland
Poland is one of the easiest countries in Europe to home educate in — and one of the largest home-education markets anywhere. Here is exactly how the mechanism works, including the part that continues to 18.
Edukacja domowa is explicit in the law — and genuinely mainstream
Home education is provided for directly in Poland's Education Law (Prawo oswiatowe, art. 37): a child fulfils compulsory education outside school under a permission (zezwolenie) issued by a school director. This is not a niche tolerance — 63,307 Polish students were registered in edukacja domowa as of January 2026 (Ministry of Education data), up from around 14,000 in 2018, supported by an ecosystem of more than 1,600 schools that actively welcome home-educated pupils. Uniquely among the countries Smartious serves, the majority are teenagers: upper-secondary students (28,863) outnumber primary pupils (25,105).
The 2021 reform removed the two old barriers
Before 1 July 2021, families needed an opinion from a public psychological-pedagogical clinic — with waits sometimes running months — and had to enrol with a school in their own voivodeship. Both requirements were abolished. Today the application consists of the parents' declaration that they will provide conditions enabling the core curriculum to be covered, and their commitment that the child will sit the annual classification exams. The director issues the decision within 30 days, and families may choose a school anywhere in Poland.
The patron school: how the mechanism actually works
The child remains formally enrolled at a Polish school — public or non-public, the family's choice nationwide — which grants the permission, administers the annual exams, and provides real support: library access, participation in extracurricular activities, and consultations before exams. Schools experienced in edukacja domowa are, in the community's own words, worth their weight in gold, and choosing one well is the single most practical decision a family makes.
The annual exams continue through 18 — we will not pretend otherwise
Students in edukacja domowa sit egzaminy klasyfikacyjne each school year at their patron school, in Polish, covering the compulsory subjects of the national core curriculum (podstawa programowa), for as long as the education obligation runs — which in Poland is to age 18, not 16. An unexcused no-show or a fail means the director withdraws the permission (art. 37 ust. 8), though retake sittings are standard practice. At the end of primary school the student also sits the egzamin osmoklasisty. This is the honest cost of Poland's otherwise easy framework, and Smartious plans the academic year around it rather than around a version of the rules we might prefer.
What this means for a Cambridge pathway: dual-track, by design
A family running Cambridge IGCSE or A-Level with Smartious keeps the Polish track alive through the patron school — most of which offer exam consultations for precisely this purpose — while the international track runs alongside. The two calendars are planned together: Polish classification exams typically in late spring, Cambridge sessions in May-June and October-November. Can my child enter Polish universities with A-Levels or an IB Diploma?+
Yes. Polish law recognises foreign secondary qualifications that grant university access in their issuing country, so both are accepted admission credentials, with universities setting programme-specific requirements. Polish-taught degrees need documented Polish proficiency; the large English-taught offer does not. The patron-school enrolment also keeps the Polish matura available as an option.
