The model: individuálne vzdelávanie under § 24
The School Act (zákon č. 245/2008 Z. z.) provides at § 24 for individuálne vzdelávanie — individual education — granted by the principal of the kmeňová škola, the school at which the pupil remains enrolled. It is available on health grounds, on the recommendation of the child's doctor, and on the request of the pupil's legal representative. The pupil does not leave the school system: they stay on the roll, and the arrangement modifies how the education is delivered rather than whether the school relationship exists.
The obligations: commission examinations, reports, and inspection
Three obligations follow, and honest planning treats all of them seriously. First, komisionálne skúšky — commission examinations sat at the enrolling school, in practice each half-year, against the state curriculum and in Slovak. Second, written progress reports: the pedagogue providing the education submits periodic reports to the principal, on which the pedagogical council bases the pupil's grading. Third, oversight: the State School Inspection controls the quality of education under individual education, while the kmeňová škola checks the pedagogical and material provision and the child's health protection — and the legal representative is obliged to permit that check. The principal may also revoke the permission. One important distinction: a pupil granted individual education on health grounds does not sit the commission examination, and is assessed on the pedagogue's reports instead.
Who teaches — and why we do not claim to be that person
The Act frames the arrangement around a pedagogical employee who provides the education and reports on it, so qualification requirements attach to that person of record; families confirm the current requirement with their school and the Ministry rather than with any provider. We are direct about the consequence: Smartious does not present itself as the pedagogue of record in a Slovak individual-education arrangement. What we are is the academic spine beside it — live Cambridge or IB teaching, continuous assessment, documented progress, and external examinations — or, for most international families, a supplementary track running alongside an ordinary school enrolment, which needs no permission at all.
The dual track in practice
A Slovak home education with international ambitions runs two curricula deliberately: the state curriculum toward the komisionálne skúšky, in Slovak, and the Cambridge track toward IGCSE and A-Level, in English. The overlap in mathematics and the sciences is heavy, so the genuine extra load concentrates in Slovak-language subjects — which is why Slovak preparation runs all year in our model, with the school's examination calendar mapped beside the Cambridge sessions from enrolment. After ten years: the fact that changes the plan
Povinná školská dochádzka — compulsory school attendance — is ten years, and lasts at most until the end of the school year in which the pupil turns sixteen. Secondary school beyond that is not compulsory. The A-Level years therefore fall outside the framework entirely: a sixteen-to-nineteen-year-old may study full-time live Cambridge A-Levels with no permission, no commission examinations, and no oversight to satisfy. It is the same structural window our Hungary and Czech Republic pages document, and in Slovakia it is stated almost nowhere.
