Homeschool laws & regulatory framework in the Sweden
Sweden has the most restrictive home-education law in our European coverage — and, inside the same statute, the cleanest post-16 window. Both deserve to be stated exactly.
The compulsory years: skolplikt means attendance, in practice
Skolplikt begins in the autumn term of the year a child turns six and runs through year 9. The 2010 Education Act allows fulfilling it outside school only on synnerliga skal — exceptional grounds — which the law's own preparatory works instruct authorities to apply "with great restrictiveness", offering examples like finishing a term in a neighbouring country's school or participating in a film production. Religious and philosophical convictions are explicitly excluded as grounds, and a preference for an international curriculum does not qualify. In practice, home education is not permitted for compulsory-age children resident in Sweden.
The consequences are real, and we will not market around them
Families who have kept compulsory-age children out of school have faced vite — fines documented by the Swedish home-education association ROHUS at between SEK 30,000 and 150,000 — alongside reports to social services, and dozens of families have emigrated to home educate, most visibly to Aland in Finland. Sweden shares with Germany the most restrictive framework in Europe. Any provider marketing "homeschooling in Sweden" to resident compulsory-age families is selling a misunderstanding of Swedish law, and we decline to join them.
What Smartious does during the compulsory years: supplementary, plainly

The post-16 window: skolplikt ends, and gymnasiet is voluntary
Here is the fact almost nobody tells families: skolplikt ends after year 9, around age 16 — and gymnasiet, for all its near-universal uptake, is voluntary. A 16-to-18-year-old resident in Sweden is under no schooling obligation at all. Full-time live Cambridge A-Levels from 16 are legally unproblematic, and for a student targeting UK universities via UCAS they are often the more direct route than a Swedish gymnasium programme. Swedish universities, for their part, assess A-Levels and the IB through the national admissions system at universityadmissions.se. This is the cleanest post-16 window in any restrictive country we serve, and it is the strongest single case for Smartious in Sweden.
The residence scope of skolplikt, stated factually
The statute itself limits skolplikt to children resident in Sweden: it does not apply to children who are durably abroad (7 kap. 2 §). That is a fact of Swedish law relevant to diaspora Swedish families, internationally mobile households, and families between postings — whose own municipality or legal adviser can confirm how it applies to their situation. We state the provision; we do not advise families on residence arrangements, and we would be wary of any provider that does.
One more honest note: Swedish distance providers serve a different need
Sweden has established distance-education providers teaching the Swedish curriculum, largely to Swedish families abroad. They are good at what they do, and what they do is not this: none offers Cambridge IGCSE, A-Level, or the IB. Smartious is the internationally examined track — supplementary during the compulsory years, complete from 16.
