How to Support Your Child in Online Learning: A Parent Guide

By Alfred Ouko, Founder · November 2026 · 6 min read · First published

Your support at home is one of the biggest factors in how well your child does online. Four practical habits help children stay focused, organised, motivated and connected, and none of them needs teaching experience. Online school gives families real freedom: no commute, lessons in your own timezone and a timetable that travels with you. It also moves some of the structure a school building provides into your home. This guide shows how to rebuild that structure simply, one habit at a time.

1. Focused: create a calm learning corner

A dedicated learning spot tells the brain it is time to work, and it works best when it is the same place every day. Choose a quiet corner away from the television and the busiest parts of the house. Have the laptop charged and the headphones, books and stationery ready before the first class, and keep phones and games out of reach during lessons. Agree on that last rule together rather than simply enforcing it.

The corner does not need to be large or fancy. A small table near a window, used consistently, beats a beautiful room that is shared with the television.

2. Organised: build a simple daily routine

Routine turns a day at home into a school day, and children do better when they know what comes next. Follow the class timetable, with set times for breaks, meals and the end of the school day. Check homework and deadlines in the student portal together, especially at the start of each week, and plan the week ahead every Sunday evening: tests, assignments and anything unusual coming up.

As your child gets older, hand the Sunday plan over to them and simply review it together.

3. Motivated: celebrate effort, not just marks

Motivation grows when children feel their effort is noticed. Marks matter, but the habits behind them matter more. Praise the specific hard work you see, such as "You stuck with that essay all afternoon." Set two or three small goals each week and tick them off together on Friday. Ask "What did you learn today?" over dinner, and listen to the answer without correcting it.

When a result disappoints, focus on the next step rather than the score. One clear plan for improvement does more than any amount of pressure.

4. Connected: stay close to their learning

Staying informed lets you step in early, before a small gap becomes a big one. Read result emails and reports with your child: at Smartious, teachers mark every paper themselves and results reach students and parents by email as soon as they are marked. Follow your child's progress through the parent portal, and talk to the school early if something feels hard, whether it is a subject, a timetable clash or something happening at home.

You are not doing this alone

Supporting an online learner is a partnership. Qualified teachers, a parent portal and results sent straight to your inbox keep you part of every step of your child's learning. Smartious teaches Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel, IB and American programmes, online from anywhere or at our Nairobi centres in Parklands and Karen.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a parent be involved in online school?

More at the start, less over time. In the first weeks, sit in at the beginning of the school day and check the week's plan together. As your child settles, step back to a weekly review and reading results together.

How will I know how my child is doing at Smartious?

Teachers mark every paper themselves and results are emailed to students and parents as soon as they are marked. You can also follow progress through the parent portal and contact the school at any time.

Can my child learn online from outside Kenya?

Yes. Smartious teaches families across Kenya, the UK, the UAE, the USA, Canada and beyond, and class times show in your own timezone.
