Brazil’s international schooling clusters in three cities, and three of its most internationally staffed industries do not. The pre-salt energy sector runs north from Rio to Macaé. The iron-ore and metallurgy economy spreads across the Quadrilátero Ferrífero rather than concentrating in Belo Horizonte. And Florianópolis has become a technology and remote-work capital whose inflow has outpaced its schools. This article is about those three, and about the one thing their families most often need that a campus cannot give them.
Pre-salt, and a workforce that moves
Rio is Brazil’s energy capital — Petrobras and the international pre-salt operators, subsea and oilfield services, and a technical community strung north to Macaé and the offshore corridor. It is the same profile we already teach in Stavanger, Baku, Hassi Messaoud, Cabinda, Takoradi, and Esbjerg, and the same need follows: a curriculum that survives a project cycle. A child who changes school system with each posting pays in alignment and sometimes a repeated year; a child on one live pathway pays nothing, because only the address changes. Cambridge A-Level Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Geography feed exactly the petroleum and geoscience programmes these families have in view.
Minas, and a state spread across its own industry
Minas Gerais is Brazil’s mining and metallurgy heartland, and its families are distributed across the Quadrilátero — Nova Lima, Itabira, Mariana, Congonhas — rather than clustered in Belo Horizonte where the provision is. Add one of Brazil’s strongest medical and engineering academic sectors, and you get a state producing a great many students aiming at competitive courses with thinner international provision than its profile suggests. The subject spine here is unusually consistent: Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Geography for the mining-bound, Biology and Chemistry for the medicine-bound, and both are sets that small schools struggle to staff for a handful of pupils.
Florianópolis, and the fastest inflow in the country
The island has become Brazil’s technology and remote-work capital, drawing a software and startup cluster and an international resident community from across Europe and the Americas, with the German-heritage industrial belt at Joinville and Blumenau inland. The schools have not matched that. Families here also encounter a specific piece of misinformation worth correcting: Santa Catarina passed a state homeschooling law, it was held unconstitutional, and the STF upheld that. Anyone planning around it is planning around a law that no longer stands, and we would rather say so directly on a page than let a family discover it in an enforcement conversation.
What these three have in common
Not fees, and not school quality — distance and subject availability. In each case the family is either physically outside the campus map or academically outside what a single timetable can staff, and in each case the household may move again. That is precisely the shape live delivery answers: identical teaching wherever the family is, subjects assembled from a group drawn across countries, and one examination board that continues to the next posting. It is also, in every case, an arrangement that runs alongside a Brazilian school rather than replacing it — which Brazilian law requires and we say plainly.
Planning the years properly
Because educação básica is compulsory from four to seventeen and there is no post-compulsory window, the Brazilian plan is a long supplementary one rather than a two-phase one. In practice that means discipline about subject choice: two to four Cambridge subjects alongside a full Brazilian school week, concentrated where the overlap with the national curriculum is heaviest — mathematics and the sciences — and then two or three A-Levels chosen strictly for the target course. More than that competes with school rather than complementing it, and a plan that collapses in the middle of ensino médio helps nobody.
Frequently Asked Questions
We are on a pre-salt rotation — does the schooling follow us?+
Yes: the same curriculum, teachers, and examination board continue to the next basin anywhere in the world, with examinations sat at authorised centres wherever the family is.
We live in the Quadrilátero rather than Belo Horizonte — does that matter?+
Not to us. Live delivery reaches Nova Lima, Itabira, Mariana and Congonhas identically, with examination travel a few times a year.
Santa Catarina had a homeschooling law — can we use it?+
No. It was held unconstitutional and the STF upheld that in ARE 1459567. Only federal law could create the modality, and none has been enacted.
How many subjects should we take alongside a Brazilian school week?+
Two to four is realistic, concentrated on mathematics, the sciences and English at IGCSE, then two or three A-Levels chosen strictly for the target course.
