From CBSE or FBISE to Cambridge IGCSE in Bahrain: A Guide for Indian and Pakistani Families

By Alfred Ouko, Founder · October 2026 · 9 min read

Indian and Pakistani families make up a large part of Bahrain's expatriate population, and many children start in CBSE or FBISE schools. Some families later move to Cambridge IGCSE: because they expect to move to another country, because they are aiming at universities in the UK, Canada or Australia, or because they want a qualification that travels. This guide explains when to switch, what changes for the student, and how to make the move smoothly. Smartious teaches Cambridge, not CBSE or FBISE.

Why families switch

IGCSE and A Level are accepted by universities worldwide and are taught in many countries, so a student who moves from Bahrain to Dubai, London or Toronto carries on without changing curriculum. Families aiming at UK universities often prefer A Level to Class 12 board results. Others simply want a different style of teaching and assessment.

When to switch

The smoothest points are before Grade 9, so that the student starts the two-year IGCSE course from the beginning, or after IGCSE, into AS and A Level. Switching in the middle of Grade 10 or Class 11 is possible but needs a careful plan for the syllabus already missed.

What changes

Cambridge examinations reward explanation and application as well as recall: longer written answers, data analysis and structured problem-solving. English carries more weight across subjects. Mathematics students moving from CBSE are usually strong on technique and need practice with Cambridge-style multi-step questions. The placement assessment shows where each student stands.

Languages

Students can keep Hindi or Urdu where an IGCSE syllabus and exam centre option is available, or take Arabic, French or another language; check availability for private candidates in Bahrain when choosing.

University plans

For universities in India, Cambridge qualifications are accepted under equivalence rules set by the Association of Indian Universities; for Pakistan, IGCSE and A Level are equated by the Inter Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC). Check the current rules for your target university before choosing subjects.

Frequently asked questions

Do you teach CBSE or FBISE?

No. We teach Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel and the American curriculum with AP. We help students move from CBSE or FBISE to Cambridge.

Is it too late to switch in Grade 10?

It is possible but harder; before Grade 9 or after IGCSE is smoother. The assessment shows what a later switch would need.

Will Indian or Pakistani universities accept IGCSE and A Level?

Generally yes, through equivalence: the Association of Indian Universities for India and the IBCC for Pakistan. Check the current rules for your university and subjects.

Where would my child sit exams?

Written papers are sat in person. Students living in Bahrain sit them in Bahrain, with private-candidate entries made through British Council Bahrain; entry deadlines fall months before each series, so check British Council Bahrain for current dates and fees.
