University in Bahrain After Online IGCSE and A Level: UoB, HEC and Equivalency

Many students in Bahrain who study IGCSE and A Level online plan to go to university abroad, but a growing number want to stay: at the University of Bahrain, or at one of the Kingdom's private universities. The good news is that IGCSE and A Level are well understood in Bahrain. The paperwork, though, matters, and it is easier to get right at the start than at the end. This guide sets out what the University of Bahrain publishes, what the Higher Education Council asks for, and how to choose subjects so that the door stays open.

What the University of Bahrain publishes

The University of Bahrain's published admission policy says secondary certificates are recognised on the Ministry of Education's attestation, and its list of accepted international certificates includes GCSE/IGCSE, AP and IB. It also allows A Level courses with a grade of B or above to be matched to first-year (100-level) courses in the student's programme, subject to the department's approval. Rules change, so read the current policy and ask the admissions office before choosing subjects.

The equivalency letter

For certificates from a school system other than Bahrain's, universities can ask for an equivalency letter, issued by the Ministry of Education's Private Education Directorate. Ask early what the Directorate needs for your child's combination of IGCSE and A Level subjects, including any required subjects and the number of passes.

HEC authentication

The Higher Education Council requires students starting university in Bahrain to have their secondary certificates authenticated. Private universities publish their own lists of documents; RCSI Bahrain, for example, lists original IGCSE and A Level certificates and any equivalency letter. Keep original certificates safe and allow time for authentication.

Choosing subjects with the end in mind

Start from the programme: medicine, engineering and business each have their own subject requirements, usually including Mathematics and English at IGCSE and specific A Level subjects. Plan IGCSE and A Level choices to meet them, and keep a record of each year's reports.

Universities abroad

IGCSE and A Level are accepted by UK universities through UCAS and by universities in the US, Canada, Australia and across the Gulf, each with its own requirements. A strong A Level profile keeps both Bahraini and international options open.

More guides for families in Bahrain

IGCSE and A Level lead to Bahraini universities as well as to universities abroad, but plan the paperwork: equivalency, authentication and the right subjects. Book an assessment and we will plan subjects with your child's university in mind.
