Sitting IGCSE and A Level Exams in Bahrain: British Council Entries and Deadlines

By Alfred Ouko, Founder · October 2026 · 8 min read

An online school can teach anywhere, but examinations are sat in person. For students in Bahrain studying Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel online, the papers are sat in the Kingdom, and for students who are not on the roll of a school in Bahrain the route is a private-candidate entry through British Council Bahrain. This guide explains how that works, the exam series, when to plan, and the subjects that need extra thought.

Who enters the student

Students on the roll of a registered school in Bahrain are entered by that school. Students learning online sit as private candidates at a centre in Bahrain; British Council Bahrain takes private-candidate entries for Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel school examinations. Smartious is a Cambridge International registered school and a Pearson Edexcel approved centre. We plan the subjects, papers and series with you and help with the registration.

How British Council Bahrain registration works

British Council Bahrain's published process is an online registration form, with fees shown on the form and payment by cash or card through its customer services team. Entry documents are issued before the examinations. Dates, fees and the subjects available to private candidates change each series, so always work from the British Council Bahrain website.

The exam series

Cambridge IGCSE and AS and A Level run their main series in May/June and October/November. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in January and May/June, and International A Level units can be sat in January, May/June and October/November. Entry deadlines are usually several months before each series.

Subjects that need care

Some components are harder for private candidates: coursework, endorsed practical work and speaking tests may not be available, or a different option may be needed, such as an alternative-to-practical paper in the sciences. Check which components and options the centre offers before choosing subjects, and plan around them.

A timeline that works

Decide subjects and the series a year ahead. Check the centre's list of subjects and options at the start of the year. Register before the deadline, not on it. Sit mock examinations under timed conditions in the months before. Plan travel to the centre for each paper, allowing for traffic.
