Online British School in Bahrain: Cambridge, Edexcel and How to Choose

By Alfred Ouko, Founder · October 2026 · 9 min read

The British curriculum is the most common choice for expatriate families in Bahrain and for many Bahraini families planning for universities abroad. Online, "British school" can mean the National Curriculum for England with GCSEs, or the international route most families here use: Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel, from Primary to IGCSE and A Level. This guide explains the difference, how a live online British school works on Bahrain's Sunday to Thursday week, where students sit exams, and how to choose.

Cambridge, Edexcel or the English National Curriculum?

The National Curriculum for England leads to GCSEs and A Levels set for schools in England, and most UK GCSEs cannot be taken outside the UK. Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel offer international versions, IGCSE (Edexcel calls it International GCSE) and International A Level, designed to be taught and examined worldwide, including in Bahrain. For a family in Bahrain, the international route is the practical one: the same standard, accepted by UK universities through UCAS, and sat in Bahrain.

How a live online British school works

Students follow a weekly timetable of live lessons with subject teachers, in small groups or one to one, on Bahrain time. Bahrain is on Arabia Standard Time, UTC+3, the same as our teachers in Nairobi, so a 9am lesson is 9am in Manama, and the timetable runs Sunday to Thursday around Bahrain's Friday and Saturday weekend. Work is set and marked, short tests run weekly, and parents receive a written report each term.

Primary to A Level

Cambridge Primary (ages 5 to 11) and Lower Secondary (11 to 14) build English, Mathematics and Science; IGCSE (14 to 16) usually means six to nine subjects over two years; International AS and A Level (16 to 19) means three or four subjects in depth for university. Pearson Edexcel International A Level is modular, with units that can be sat across several series. Arabic and Islamic Studies are available at IGCSE for families who want them.

Exams in Bahrain

Written papers are sat in person. Students living in Bahrain sit them in Bahrain, with private-candidate entries made through British Council Bahrain; entry deadlines fall months before each series, so check British Council Bahrain for current dates and fees. Cambridge runs its main series in May/June and October/November; Edexcel International A Level units can also be sat in January.

Choosing an online British school

Check which board the school is registered with; how many lessons are live each week and who teaches them; how practical science is covered; how the school handles exam entries in Bahrain; what the full-year cost is; and what happens if your family moves. Smartious is a Cambridge International registered school and a Pearson Edexcel approved centre.

Fees

Smartious online school is from USD 423/month for Primary (about BHD 159 at the BHD 0.376 peg, October 2026), payable termly; fees vary by curriculum and level. One-to-one tuition is USD 15/hour (about BHD 5.6). Exam fees are separate and paid to the exam centre.

Is an online British school recognised in Bahrain?

The IGCSE and A Level certificates are issued by Cambridge or Pearson. Schools and universities in Bahrain set their own rules, and some ask for a Ministry of Education equivalency letter, so check before choosing subjects.

Is there a time difference?

No. Bahrain and our teachers share UTC+3.

How do we start?
