IB PYP & MYP: IB Primary Years & Middle Years Programmes

International Baccalaureate · Ages 3–16 · From early years through to pre-Diploma

The IB Primary Years (ages 3–12) and Middle Years (ages 11–16) programmes. Inquiry-based education developing critical thinking from early childhood.

The Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Middle Years Programme (MYP) form the foundation of the IB continuum, leading toward the IB Diploma. Both are built on inquiry-based learning — students learn by asking questions, investigating, and making connections across subjects rather than memorising in isolation. The approach develops curiosity, independence and conceptual understanding from an early age.

Subjects

Primary Years Programme (Ages 3–12)

The PYP frames learning around transdisciplinary themes — who we are, how the world works, how we organise ourselves — so children explore literacy, numeracy, science and social studies as connected ideas. It emphasises the development of the whole child: academic, social and emotional.

Middle Years Programme (Ages 11–16)

The MYP bridges primary education and the Diploma. Students study eight subject groups while developing the skills of independent learning, and complete a personal project in their final year. The MYP builds the research, organisation and analytical habits the Diploma later demands.

Progression

PYP and MYP lead naturally into the IB Diploma Programme, but the skills they develop — inquiry, communication, self-management — transfer well to any senior pathway, including IGCSE and A-Level.

Why choose IB PYP & MYP

PYP and MYP suit families who want a coherent, skills-focused education from the early years onward, and who value curiosity and conceptual understanding over rote learning. They are an ideal foundation for students intending to continue to the IB Diploma.
